Kansas City, MO – The Webber International Flag Football team is currently competing at the NAIA Flag Football National Championships in Kansas City, Missouri. The Warriors played two pool games against Milligan and St. Mary (Kansas), winning both, setting Webber up in the A Bracket of the Single elimination tournament.
The Warriors struggled out of the gate against Milligan, as Senior Quarterback Sam Wilson threw a pick six to start the Warriors first offensive possession, making it 6-0 after the Warrior Defense stopped the Buffaloes on their first possession. The Warriors trailed 13-0 at the half, but came out swinging in the second half. A touchdown pass to Zionah Shingles kept Webber in it, but late in the fourth quarter, Webber found themselves down 19-13 and a whole field to go. Wilson drove the Warriors down the field, and connected with Cheyenne Durand for a touchdown, and after a good PAT, Webber had a 20-19 lead. After Milligan drove down to the Redzone, Webber stood tall, keeping the Buffaloes out of the endzone, and hanging on for the win.
Webber had a much better start against the Spires, as Wilson connected with Kaitlyn Sigmundi to open the scoring. She found Ijy'ana Edwards, and Shingles for long touchdowns as well. Webber led 20-0 at the half. In the second half it was Edwards again with a score, as Webber took down St. Mary 33-6.
Defensively, Khaliya Gaitor put up multiple sacks in each game, while Emily Cruz was an effective tackler. Sigmundi has nabbed six interceptions, including four against St. Mary.
The Warriors will take on the Thomas Nighthawks in the first round of the A Bracket in single elimination at 11:00 AM.
