ATLANTA, GA - The Webber International University women's flag football team advanced to the championship bracket after a 1-1 pool play bracket.
Â
The first game of the day for the Warriors matched them up against the Buffalo of Milligan University. Junior quarterback
Samantha Wilson connected with Senior
Zoe Melo on the first drive of the game for a 35 yard score. A conversion pass to Senior Samantha Gonzalez had the Warriors up 7-0.
Â
After a great defensive effort the Warriors marched down the field and on third and goal, Wilson found sophomore
Kaitlyn Sigmundi on an out route for the touchdown. Wilson ran the ball in untouched for the conversion and the Warriors were rolling 14-0.
Â
The Buffaloes put on a great drive of their own to get down to the one yard line before the Warrior defense stood tall and caused a turnover on downs. Wilson led the team all the way down the field only to give the ball back to Milligan inside the five yard line. Gonzalez then stepped in front of a Buffalo pass and returned it for the pick six. A Sigmundi conversion put the Warriors up 21-0 at the half.
The two teams traded touchdowns to start the second half with the Warrior touchdown coming off a 3 yard pass from Wilson to Gonzalez. Wilson converts the extra point and the Warriors led 28-6.
Â
The next series Junior
Cheyenne Durand intercepted a long pass to give the Warriors the ball and Wilson methodically drove her team down the field. Taking matters into her own hands, Wilson ran it in for the final score of the day and the Warrior 34-6 victory.
Â
Game two saw two familiar foes battle it out. Crosslake rival Warner University was up next and this game did not disappoint.
Â
Webber got out early on a textbook drive that saw Wilson run it in from 8 yards out. Extra point was no good and the Warriors held an early 6-0 lead. Warner put a couple drives together but sophomore Gabriela Franzose intercepted a Royal pass to end one of the drives and a great defensive stand inside the 3 yard line right at halftime saw the Warriors go into the half up 6-0.
Â
The Royals scored on their first drive of the second half on a pass to the back of the endzone to sophomore Ana Pat Vincensini and knotted the score at 6.
Â
Vincensini wasn't done for the Royals when her second touchdown of the half and extra point gave the Royals a 13-6 lead in the fourth quarter.
Â
The Warriors were not done fighting and with two minutes in the game Wilson and company had something up their sleeve. A couple quick passes to junior
Rylee Bolser and Sophomore
Jasmine Henry got them near midfield. On third and fifteen with under two minutes to go, Wilson connected on a slant route with Bolser. Bolser danced her way down the field and found paydirt.
Â
Coach Jeff Melesky called a time out and Webber came out going for two and the potential win. The conversion fell short and Webber would lose a heart breaker 13-12.
Â
"This is the kind of game you love being in and hate it all at the same time," said Melesky. "These two teams just battled for 48 minutes and it could have gone either way. Proud of the way we handled ourselves today, Sam (Wilson) played great,
Jasmine Henry did great rushing the quarterback, and our athletes played incredibly well. Looking forward to getting in the championship bracket and seeing where it leads us."
Â
The Warriors finish pool play as the fifth seed in the bracket and are back in action on Thursday at 10:30am in the Mercedes Benz Dome. Their opponent will be a very familiar foe, the fourth seeded Warner Royals.
