Warriors Fall to Royals

4/10/2024 7:29:00 PM

Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Flag Football team hosted their Crooked Lake Rivals Warner University Wednesday afternoon with SUN Conference positioning on the line. Despite the Warriors shutting out the Royals offense, Webber fell to Warner 14-12.

The Warriors started the game off on the right foot as they started the game with the ball. Starting Quarterback Samantha Wilson completed three straight passes to Sammy Gonzalez, Kaitlyn Sigmundi, and Rylee Bolser. A fourth down completion to Brea Kamm set Sigmundi up for a 38-yard touchdown. The Warrior defense forced the Royals into a turnover on downs, featuring pass breakups from Cheyenne Durand and Bolser. The Warriors were not able to capitalize on the turnover, however, as a pick-six gave the Royals a 7-6 lead.

The Warriors were able to engineer another scoring drive, as Leah Bailey, Zoe Melo, Bolser, Jasmine Henry, and Gonzalez all caught passes from Wilson. The drive culminated in a five-yard touchdown to Bailey. The Warriors took a 12-7 lead into the half.

On the Royals' first drive of the second half, Bolser intercepted the ball at the 17-yard line, giving Webber excellent field position. The Warriors however would be unable to score, giving Warner the ball back at their own five. Warner would have multiple chunk yardage plays resulting in a march down the field. This march would be halted by an interception in the endzone by Durand. The ensuing drive by Webber would result in another pick-six, giving Warner a 14-12 lead. The Warriors would put together one more drive into the endzone, but on fourth down, Gonzalez was unable to extend the ball across the goal line, and the Warriors dropped to the Royals 14-12.

After the game, Head Coach Jeff Melesky said "We had one of the best teams in the country on the ropes and couldn't put it away. We are a young team and that's something that we are going to learn. We are looking forward to our next opportunity and what the future brings for the Webber Warriors."

The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, April 12th when they host Campbellsville University for Senior Day on the Warrior Turf Field at 1 PM.
