ATLANTA, Ga. (May 20, 2023) - The Webber International University women's flag football team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to take part in the NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals this past Thursday and Friday. After falling to Keiser University in the opening game of the tournament, the Warriors overcame Midland University but ultimately were shutout by St. Thomas University to ended the 2023 season.
The Warriors (10-9 overall) opened the tournament with a matchup against the Keiser Seahawks. Webber got off to a hot start by dominating the majority of the first half and taking a 12-0 lead. The Seahawks scored their first points late in the second quarter to make it 12-6 at halftime. Keiser's defense stepped up tremendously in the second half as the Warriors were held scoreless for the entirety of the second half. The Seahawks scored 19 unanswered points to steal the victory late in the game.
On Friday, Webber took on Midland, a team it had not faced all year. Midland was able to capitalize on a couple of costly turnovers including a pick-six which led them to an early lead. The Warriors were able to find the endzone and get their first points on the board and entered the halftime break trailing 14-7. Webber's defense locked in and held Midland scoreless throught the third and fourth quarter's, enabling the offense to settle in and score twice to earn a 20-14 victory.
Following the victory over Midland, the Warriors advanced to face yet another Sun Conference opponent, this time in the form of the St. Thomas Bobcats. Webber ended the regular-season with a 1-1 record against the Bobcats with both matchups being high-scoring but that would not be the case this time around. A defensive battle which ended in favor of St. Thomas as the Warriors were unable to score in a 13-0 shutout.
The Warriors end the season with an overall record of 10-9, matching their program best of 10 victories in a season.
