Women’s Flag Football Suffers Semifinal Defeat to Thomas

Box Score THOMASVILLE, Ga. (April 28, 2023) – The Webber International University women's flag football team traveled up to Georgia to take on top-seeded Thomas University in the semifinal of The Sun Conference tournament. The Warriors battled but were unable to hang with the Night Hawks in the second half, falling 33-14.
 
The Night Hawks (15-1 overall) put their high-caliber defense on display as they forced the Warriors (9-7) into four turnovers, putting them in great field position on multiple occasions.
 
Webber got off to a shaky start after throwing an interception on just the second play of the game. The Night Hawks took over on the visitor eight-yard line and scored in just one play on a successful touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead.
 
After being forced into a turnover on downs, the Warrior-defense scored the first points of the day as Kayla Burrows intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7. It did not last long, however, as Thomas then went on a 7-play 66-yard drive to regain the lead at 14-7. Things then went from bad to worse for Webber as another pass would be intercepted on the next drive and this time it was returned for six points, extending Thomas' lead to 21-7.
 
The Warriors forced the Night Hawks to punt to open the second quarter and followed that up by scoring just seven plays later. Samantha Wilson found Breaza Robinson for a four-yard touchdown completion, making it a one-score game once again.
 
Thomas locked down defensively in the second half, not allowing a single score for either of the third and fourth quarters. The Night Hawks scored a touchdown in each of the final two quarters as well to extend their lead and confirm their spot in the championship final.
 
Wilson ended the game 29-of-49 for 232 passing yards and a touchdown on the day. Her leading receiver was Robinson with eight catches for 47 yards and a touchdown, followed by Burrows with five receptions for 57 yards. Kaitlyn Sigmundi contributed with three catches for a total of 44 yards as well.
 
Defensively, Burrows and Sammy Gonzalez led the team with five flag pulls each while Burrows added an interception returned for a touchdown. Jasmine Henry tallied four tackles, two of which were sacks. Jada Dillard added a sack to her credit as well.
The Warriors will now look forward to the NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals which will take place from Wednesday, May 17th to Saturday, May 20th.
