Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 19, 2023) - The Webber International University women's flag football team returned from a successful trip to Kentucky to host the University of Fort Lauderdale in its first home matchup in 20 days. The Warriors overcame a sluggish first half to deliver a dominating 38-6 victory over the Eagles.
The Warriors (6-2 overall) amassed 231 yards of total offense while limiting the Eagles (4-6) to just 173. Webber also recorded two defensive touchdowns and forced three turnovers in total.
Webber got off to an unfortunate start after
Samantha Wilson's first pass would be intercepted and returned for a touchdown, gifting UFTL an early 6-0 lead. The Warriors reconciled on the following drive, however, with a 10-play, 66-yard drive which ended in a touchdown pass from Wilson to
Breaza Robinson. After forcing the Eagles to punt on their first offensive possession, Webber quickly drove down the field once again. An eight-play drive was capped off with a 14-yard touchdown from Wilson to
Kaitlyn Sigmundi, giving the Warriors the lead at 12-6.
After a scoreless second quarter, UFTL started the second half on offense.
Hayden Rupe proceeded to intercept the ball on the first play of the half at the 12-yard line and run it in for the score. A successful one-point conversion made it a 19-6 lead for Webber. The Warriors then forced the Eagles into a turnover on downs and proceeded to score on the ensuing possession. Following a 23-yard completion to
Kayla Burrows on 4th-and-8, Wilson then connected with Burrows again for a five-yard touchdown.
The Eagles' next possession did not go according to plan as Robinson intercepted a pass and returned it 22-yards for the second defensive touchdown of the day. The Warriors scored once more, late in the fourth quarter, after freshman
Ciara Zino found
Zoe Melo in the corner of the endzone for the first passing touchdown of her career and sealing the 38-6 victory.
Wilson was 16-of-20 for 135 yards passing and three touchdowns while adding six rushes for 35 yards. Zino threw one pass and completed it for a 10-yard touchdown.
Emma Balacco finished with one rush for 24 yards followed by Zino with one rush for 15 yards and
Jasmine Henry with one rush for 10. Webber's leading receiver was Robinson with six catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Burrows ended with three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown as well.
Defensively, Robinson was a standout with six flag pulls, two interceptions and a pass breakup. She was followed closely by Burrows with five flag pulls and a pass breakup. Melo and Rupe both finished with three flag pulls while Rupe added an interception returned for a touchdown.
The Warriors now return to Sun Conference action as they will host Thomas University on Friday, March 24th at 4 p.m. on the Warrior Grass Field.
