ATLANTA, Ga. (May 13, 2022) - The Webber International University women's flag football team traveled to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia to take part in the 2022 NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals. After going 1-1 in pool play on the first day, the Warriors would defeat St. Thomas University in the quarterfinal before falling to Thomas University, 33-0, in the semifinal round.
The Warriors (8-10 overall) would open pool play on Thursday with a 14-6 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University (8-8), who they previously beat 26-7, earlier in the regular season. Webber would then match up against the Thomas Night Hawks (18-1), who they lost to twice in the regular season, both of which were one-possession games. This time, the Warriors would take a 6-0 lead, threatening to score again before time would run out in the half. Thomas would come out of the halftime break strong and continue on to score 26 unanswered points in the second half to take the victory and earn an automatic place in the semifinal.
In the quarterfinal game on Friday morning, the Warriors would face St. Thomas University (8-7). Webber previously matched up against the Bobcats twice in the regular season, dropping both matchups. The Warriors would strike first in the game after a pass from
Samantha Wilson find
Breaza Robinson who would make an outstanding one-handed catch for the five-yard touchdown reception, earning a 6-0 lead. However, St. Thomas would score twice before halftime and convert one of its extra point attempts to take the lead 13-6 at the break.
Webber would bounce back after halftime, scoring on a touchdown pass to
Denise Garcia between two defenders. After converting the extra point, the Warriors would level the game at 13. With under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter,
Hayden Rupe would snatch an interception to regain possession for Webber. The Warriors would then drive down the field and end on a six-yard touchdown to
Susann Kaufmann to take a 20-13 lead with 1:33 left on the clock. The Webber-defense held strong on the Bobcats' next drive as Robinson would intercept a pass to seal the victory.
The semifinal game would see a rematch of pool play as the Warriors would face Thomas yet again. The Night Hawks would find the endzone first this time around, taking a 6-0 lead. Late in the second quarter, Webber would drive down the field into Thomas' redzone. After two consecutive penalties from the Night Hawks, the Warriors would find themselves inside the one-yard line. Thomas' defense would hold strong, however, making a goal-line stand and forcing a turnover on downs. This would begin a shifting of tides as the Night Hawks would then score on a 77-yard scamper the other way to extend their lead to 13-0 with just under a minute remaining in the half. Webber would then get the ball back, attempting to get themselves on the board before the end of the half. Unfortunately, Thomas would intercept the ball and return it roughly 26 yards for another score, taking a 19-0 lead at halftime.
The Night Hawks would score twice more in the third quarter to extend its lead to 33-0, putting away any doubt and punching their ticket to the championship game.
It is the second year in a row that the Warriors have made it to the semifinal game of the NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals. Last year, Webber fell to Ottawa University who went on to win the Championship Final.
