Webber gearing up for chance to shine in inaugural NAIA Women’s Flag Football Finals

BABSON PARK, Fla. (May 3, 2021) – Currently with a record of 8-3 and a second-place finish in The Sun Conference regular-season standings under its belt, the Webber International University women's flag football team is now setting its sights on making a name for itself at the inaugural NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals.

As announced by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), NFL FLAG, Reigning Champs Experiences (RCX) and the Atlanta Falcons, the 2021 NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals (May 4-8) will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the first-ever NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals, capping off the inaugural season of NAIA women's flag football.

Highlights from the season so far for Webber include:
  • Winning the first ever collegiate varsity women's flag football game 52-0 over Midland University (Feb. 13).
  • Scoring the first ever touchdown in the history of women's varsity flag football with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sierra Harris to RayGene Garner in the first quarter vs. Midland.
  • Winning its first ever Sun Conference game and first ever game against its Crooked Lake rival Warner University 32-7 (Feb. 20).
  • Defeating St. Thomas University three times during the regular season, including a 20-19 victory in four overtimes during the first meeting between the teams.
  • Quarterback Sierra Harris being named TSC Offensive Player of the Week three times during the regular season.
  • Have three different players (Breaza Robinson, RayGene Garner, Kayla Burrows) wins TSC Defensive Player of the Week honors during the regular season.
  • Putting six players on the inaugural All-Sun Conference Team (Offense: Harris, Garner, Burrows; Defense: Garner, Robinson, Burrows).
  • Earning a piece of all three of The Sun Conference Superlative Awards (Sierra Harris – Co-Player of the Year; Jeffrey Melesky – Co-Coach of the Year, RayGene Garner – Co-Champion of Character).
In 2020, the NAIA announced a partnership with NFL FLAG and Reigning Champs Experiences (RCX) to develop league infrastructure and operations for the first women's flag football competition governed by a collegiate athletics association. In its first season, 13 NAIA schools established women's flag football programs.

Including Webber, a total of 10 teams will compete in the 2021 Women's Flag Football Finals: Milligan University, Kansas Wesleyan University, Keiser University, University of Saint Mary, Midland University, St Thomas University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Ottawa University and Cottey College.

Participating teams will each play in at least two games during the 2021 Women's Flag Football Finals to determine seeding for the championship bracket. Bracket play will be single elimination, with the championship game being held on Saturday, May 8. The event is free and open to the public. During pool play on Thursday, May 6, Webber will play against the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) at 11 a.m. and against Xavier University of Louisiana (La.) at 3:15 p.m. inside the Atlanta Silverbacks Stadium.
