Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 3, 2021) – In what was its 2021 regular-season finale, the Webber International University women's flag football team defeated St. Thomas University for the third time during the inaugural flag football season, winning 33-12 over the Bobcats to also pick up the Warriors' first official road win in program history.
With the win, Webber improved to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in The Sun Conference to all but wrap up second place in the inaugural TSC standings. St. Thomas, meanwhile, fell to 5-5 and 4-3.
RayGene Garner and
Kayla Burrows were the stars of the day for the Warriors as Garner caught two touchdown passes while Burrows had two interceptions and had two defensive scores as well.
Trailing 6-0 and with only one second left before halftime and 10 yards to go, Webber got on the scoreboard thanks to the first passing touchdown from
Sierra Harris to Garner with zeros on the clock. Harris then rushed in for the extra point attempt to put the Warriors up 7-6 at the break.
Late in the third quarter, Burrows came up with her second interception of the game and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. That was followed by the extra-point pass from Harris to
Susann Kaufmann to make it 14-6 Warriors.
Then early in the fourth quarter, Garner intercepted another Bobcats' pass, and on the very next play, Harris found Garner for 20 yards for their second touchdown of the day to make it 20-6.
The stretch of 20 unanswered points for Webber was finally halted when St. Thomas scored on a three-yard touchdown pass with 5:20 left to play to make it 20-12, but the Warrior defense kept the Bobcats out of the end zone on the extra-point rushing attempt to keep the margin at eight points instead of seven.
From there, the Warrior offense was able to run the clock all the way down to under a minute left before Harris rushed in from five yards out and then added an extra-point pass to
Breaza Robinson to make it 27-12.
"We played our butts off from the end of the first half to the end of the game," said Head Coach Jeff Melesky. "It was a complete team victory today. Everybody did something that was good, and I couldn't be more proud of how we have come together as a team."
Statistically, Webber was outgained 246 to 170 in total yards and picked up four fewer first downs than St. Thomas, but made up for it with an opportunistic offense that went 4-for-4 in the red zone, along with timely stops on defense and four total interceptions for 134 return yards and two touchdowns.
The final play of the game was another pick six as Robinson intercepted it and returned it 15 yards before pitching it to Burrows for the final 25 yards to make it 33-12.
Harris, the reigning Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week, finished with 14 completed passes on 24 attempts for 142 yards, and had three total touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing) while also adding 28 rushing yards on six attempts.
Burrows led the Warriors both in receptions (4) and in yards (44).
The Warrior defense was paced by Kaufmann with 9.5 flag pulls (8 unassisted).
The first ever regular season for the Warriors is now over. The Sun Conference Tournament is set for Saturday, April 17, at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens, Florida. The first ever NAIA Postseason Invitational will then be May 6-8, and is currently scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia.
