Women’s flag football suffers first loss of the season at Keiser, beats St. Thomas twice

(February 27, 2021) – For the first time in program history, the Webber International University women's flag football team played on the road away from the Warrior Grass Field. Against Keiser University, the team picked to finish first in The Sun Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll, the Warriors lost by a final score of 45-0, but against St. Thomas University, Webber bounced back by first finishing off its incomplete game against the Bobcats from February 13 with a 20-19 win before ending the day with an 18-6 win again against St. Thomas.

In the overtime win against St. Thomas (2-2 overall, 1-1 The Sun Conference) which started as a battle between two undefeated teams, neither team scored in the first overtime period, but it took a stop at its own one-yard line for Webber (4-1, 2-1) to hold off the Bobcats.

Then in the second overtime period, Webber scored on a 14-yard run by RayGene Garner and converted the extra point on a pass from Garner to Breaza Robinson, but St. Thomas answered with a five-yard rushing score, and also ran in to convert the extra point.

In the third overtime, St. Thomas again rushed in for a score from five yards out, but this time, the Bobcats missed their passing attempt on the extra point try, giving the Warriors a chance to win it. A four-yard touchdown pass from Sierra Harris to Susann Kaufmann tied the game again, and then the extra point pass from Harris to Garner gave Webber the walk off win.

Then in the full game against St. Thomas, Webber scored the lone points of the first half with a nine-yard run from Harris late in the first quarter to make it 6-0.

Then in the fourth quarter, Harris passed to Robinson for a 19-yard score to make it 12-0. St. Thomas scored on a two-yard run with six and a half minutes left to make it 12-6 before the final score of the game came on another passing touchdown from Harris, this time 23 yards to Garner.

Harris finished 16-for-24 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns in the game while Robinson and Emma Parrish both hauled in five catches and Garner had a game-high 90 receiving yards.

Robinson also recorded a game-high 10 flag pulls on the defensive end while Kaufman added seven.

Next up, the Warriors will return home to the friendly confines of the Warrior Grass Field in Babson Park, Florida, to host Florida Memorial University at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.
