Box Score West Palm Beach, FL. – The Webber International Women's soccer team traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida on Thursday evening to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The Warriors battled hard throughout the match but were unable to fight back and dropped their season opener 3-0 to the Sailfish.
The Sailfish took control of the game early, taking the first two shots of the game in the fourth and fifth minutes, both shots went wide and Cameron Laine, the Warriors Goalkeeper was not challenged on either chance. Both teams played hard in the first 10 minutes, committing six fouls combined, four from the Warriors and two from the Sailfish. The Sailfish would have another shot go wide in 21st minute as Michelle O'Driscoll took her second shot of the first half. Palm Beach Atlantic would take the advantage in the 23rd minute when Kendall Furrow got a shot past Laine and gave the Sailfish the 1-0 lead halfway through the first half. The Warriors tried to have a quick response on a shot from outside the box from Ella Campbell, but Taylor Jackson, the Sailfish keeper made her first save of the game. The Warriors would continue to attack as they had four shot attempts in four minutes from Deborah Guillen, Leah McDaid, Hannah Esson, and a second shot of the half from Campbell. After some back-and-forth play over the final 15 minutes of play, the first half came to a close with the Sailfish taking a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
To start the second half, the Sailfish jumped on the offensive early, taking three shots in the first five minutes, two of which went wide, and the third was saved by Laine for her first save of the game. Just minutes later, in the 51st minute, the Sailfish extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal by O'Driscoll assisted by Sydney Cromwell. The Warriors once again tried to answer back quickly against the Sailfish with three shots of their own in quick succession, but Jackson made two more saves on shots from McDaid and Pia Grosse in the 52nd and 54th minutes. McDaid would take another shot on net in the 57th minute, but once again Jackson made another save for her fourth save of the game. The Sailfish would get the next chance at goal in the 64th minute, but the shot from Sydney Timmes went over the bar for a Warrior goal kick. The Sailfish continued the offensive attack with another shot from O'Driscoll, looking for her second goal of the half, towards the bottom left corner of the net, but Laine made the save comfortably. O'Driscoll took her fifth shot of the game in the 77th minute but missed wide right. Laine recorded her third save of the game on a shot from Cromwell, but less than a minute later Cromwell was able to find the back of the net on a pass from Bella De Silva that gave the Sailfish a 3-0 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the game. Cromwell would go for goal again for the third time in just as many minutes, but Laine was able to corral this shot and record her fourth save. Erin Cepeda would take her chance at goal, but Laine scooped another one for her fifth save. Faith Cullen-Cooper picked up a yellow card in the 88th minute, but the Warriors were unable to mount a comeback, losing the season opener 3-0.
The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday, September 5th, to take on Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL.
