BABSON PARK, Fla. — The Webber International University women's soccer team battled back to even the match in the second half but ultimately fell 3-1 to Saint Leo University on Tuesday morning at Warrior Grass Field.
The Warriors entered the matchup looking to build on their start to the season, but the Lions controlled possession early and created several opportunities in the opening half. Webber's defense remained organized under pressure, while goalkeeper Brylee Kamm came up with several important saves to keep Saint Leo off the scoreboard.
As the half progressed, the Warriors began to find their rhythm and created several opportunities of their own. Webber put multiple shots toward goal late in the opening 45 minutes, but both Kamm and Saint Leo goalkeeper Addison Pitts turned in strong performances to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The Lions came out of the break with renewed pressure and continued to control possession. Webber's defense stood firm through the opening stages of the second half, denying several Saint Leo scoring opportunities.
Saint Leo eventually broke through in the 61st minute. Annika Sculler fired a shot toward goal that Kamm managed to save, but the rebound fell into the middle of the penalty area. Chloe Froese was there to capitalize, sending the ball into the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
The Warriors responded with pressure of their own and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Webber earned a penalty kick. Sophia Schlager stepped to the spot and delivered, finding the back of the net to level the match at 1-1. The goal marked Schlager's third of the season.
Saint Leo answered just five minutes later. Sara Hansen provided the assist to Froese, who scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 81st minute to put the Lions back in front, 2-1.
Saint Leo added a third goal in the 88th minute after the Warriors were called for a foul inside the penalty area. Kennedy Hartzel converted the ensuing penalty kick to extend the Lions' advantage to 3-1 and secure the victory.
Saint Leo finished the match with a 29-5 advantage in shots and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Both teams were whistled for 14 fouls, while four yellow cards were issued, with two going to each side.
Kamm finished the match with seven saves for the Warriors, while Pitts recorded one save for Saint Leo.
Despite the result, Webber showed resilience throughout the contest, battling back to level the match in the second half before Saint Leo regained control late.
