BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 1, 2019) – The final three weeks of the 2019 Webber International University junior varsity baseball season featured three straight wins in three days to start the week of March 11 and finished with five wins overall for the Warriors.
In all, the JV Warriors finished their season with a record of 8-13 overall and finished 6-7 at home on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
Season highlights for the Warriors included beating Sun Conference foe Keiser University on back-to-back days on Tuesday, March 12, and Wednesday, March 13, and defeating Crooked Lake rival Warner University 12-3 on Monday, February 25, in Babson Park, Florida. On Wednesday, March 20, the Warriors also earned an impressive 6-4 road win over a very strong NJCAA Daytona State College team.
Head JV Coach
Matt Saliba said, "Myself and
Brett Kaminski had a blast this season coaching this group of guys. They were a good group to work with and I believe they all improved and got better throughout the year. With the talent that we had, we could have won some more games but for the most part, we are pleased with the way they played this season. We are looking forward to seeing these young players grow and turn into better baseball players as we get ready for next season."
Webber vs. Inspiration Academy (Monday, March 11; Babson Park, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 4, Inspiration Academy 3.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "The highlight of this game was Jason Rewis's pitching performance where he went six innings with six strikeouts and zero runs allowed. I have been really pleased with the way he has been throwing the ball all year, and he made it a lot easier for our hitters to get some runs and secure the win."
Â
Webber at Keiser University (Tuesday, March 12; West Palm Beach, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 12, Keiser 5.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "We came out swinging the bats this game and put up a 12-spot to secure the win 12-5 over Keiser. A lot of different guys contributed to these runs. On the mound, Trent Massaro, Keon Cusic and Ty English all contributed to hold Keiser at five runs and give us a chance to win."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber vs. Keiser University (Wednesday, March 13; Babson Park, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 18, Keiser 8 in seven innings.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "The bats stayed hot against Keiser and were able to put up 18 runs in seven innings. Everyone was having very good at bats and we were able to get guys on base the whole day. There were again several hitters that contributed to these runs. Pitchers Joseph Creamons, Travis Holton and Orlando Pena combined for some good quality innings and we were able to score enough runs to keep a comfortable lead."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber vs. Jackson Community College (Thursday, March 14; Babson Park, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 0, Jackson 10 in seven innings.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "Jackson threw some talented pitchers against us and we were not able to get anything going offensively. We didn't have our best game on the mound or defensively. We are looking to finish the week on a good note on Sunday and finish winning four out of five games this week."
Â
Webber vs. Collège Laflèche (Sunday, March 17; Babson Park, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 4, Collège Laflèche 3.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "This was a very competitive game and I loved how our guys didn't back down when the game got tight. Jason Rewis had another really good pitching performance throwing 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. He gave us a great start and then Joseph Creamons came in to finish the game. Creamons got into some jams and put some runners on base, but he didn't give in and worked to give us the win."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber vs. Warner University (Monday, March 18; Babson Park, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 10, Warner 14.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "We swung the bats tonight very well and put up 10 runs, but defensively and on the mound it was not a good performance. We can't give a team 14 runs and expect to win. We have to be better on the mound and defensively."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber at Daytona State College (Wednesday, March 20; Daytona Beach, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 6, Daytona State 4.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "This was one of our overall best performances of the season especially because we beat a very good Daytona State team. Jose Santiago started the game for us and threw three innings and gave up four runs. Joseph Creamons came in to pitch in the fourth and threw six scoreless innings for us. He had every pitch working and constantly got ahead in the count on Daytona's hitters. Him keeping them off balance is what helped us win the game."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber vs. Inspiration Academy (Thursday, March 21; Babson Park, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 1, Inspiration Academy 13.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "We did not play very good baseball and got beat all the way around. Austin Seeman didn't have his best stuff and gave up three runs in four innings. After that, he was followed by Keon Cusic, Caden Borders and Travis Holton. This was Borders' first outing on the mound and he showed some good things but together as a pitching staff, we gave up 13 runs."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber at Warner University (Monday, March 25; Lake Wales, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 5, Warner 13.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "We gave up seven runs in the first inning and this put us in a hole for most of the game. We were not able to keep it at seven runs either as Warner was able to score 13 runs. We struggled swinging the bat as well until the end of the game where we were able to score five runs, but it was not enough to get the job done. We are a better team than what we showed and we are hoping to finish these last two games strong."
- Hitting Stats:
Â
Webber at Pasco-Hernando Community College (Tuesday, March 26; New Port Richey, Fla.):
- Final Score: Webber 1, Pasco-Hernando 8.
- Words from Coach Matt Saliba: "The game should have been a lot closer than it was. Jason Rewis, who has been good for us all year, didn't have his best stuff and gave up seven runs early in the game. Jose Santiago came in after him and threw five very good innings only giving up one run. Giving up the early runs hurt but we were also not able to put together much offense with only scoring one run. I believe if we do some little things right on the mound and defensively, that it's a much closer game and anything could have happened."
