New Warriors Shine in Miami

Miami, FL – The Webber International Men's and Women's Track teams competed at the South Florida Pre-Season Showcase in Miami Saturday evening. Both teams showed strong performances to kick off the first event of the year.

Webber had women competing in the 60-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the shot put, and the weight throw. Webber had three women in the 60, as Azora Williams, Xaniah Williams, and Alohnna-Elyse Lee all took to the blocks for the Warriors. In prelims, A. Williams finished with a time of 8.90, X. Williams finished with an 8.73, and Lee finished with an 8.17. X. Williams and Lee were the only two to compete in the 60-meter finals, as Lee finished third with an 8.03 and X. Williams finished fifth with an 8.68.

The Warriors also had three women compete in the 200-meter dash, as Lee and A. Williams were joined by Terralyn Brockington. Brockington finished eighth with a time of 31.14. A. Williams was in seventh with a time of 29.56. Lee finished in third with a time of 27.13.

Anna Beth Gonzalez was the lone Warrior to compete in the shot put and weight throw Saturday night. She finished fifth in the shot put, getting a 7.95 m throw as her best one. Her best throw of the weight netted her third place, as she threw it 8.86 meters.

The Men had runners in the 60-meter dash, the mile, the 400-meter dash, the 600-meter run, the 200-meter dash, the 3000-meter run, the long jump, the shot put, and the weight throw.

Amare Williams took home first place in the 60 finals with a time of 6.67. Lebron Williams and Kaleb Tankard finished third and fourth with 6.78 and 7.02 respectively. In the mile, Michael Granados finished eleventh with a 5.33.93 mile time. Carter Reynolds finished twelfth with a 6.06.40. Webber had five of the top six runners in the 400, with Kaleb Roth taking the top spot with a 50.70. Marcus Higgins secured third with 51.60, while Jaiden Morris got fourth with 52.76. Josiah Williams and James Andrews got fifth and sixth with 53.25 and 53.78.

In the 600, Seth Sawyer and Masqal Pierre placed second and third. Sawyer had a time of 1.26.33 while Pierre had a 1.30.41. A. Williams again won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.06. L. Williams was right behind him for second with a 21.75. Tankard, Higgins, and Roth got fourth, fifth, and sixth with times of 22.42, 22.53, and 22.57. J. Williams placed eighth in the 200 with a time of 22.78. Andrew Rodriguez and Derick Gomez competed in the 3000-meter run for the Warriors. Rodriguez got third with a sub-10 minute run, with a 9:57.72. Gomez came in fifth with a 10:05.72

For the field events, Jaime Ortiz placed third in the long jump, jumping 5.14 meters. Javien Lawson placed second in the shot put, as his best throw went 12.17 meters. Deryke Dennard placed eight in the shot put with a best throw of 10.32 meters. In the weight throw, Dennard placed second with a throw of 9.2 meters, while Lawson netted fourth with 6.76 meters.

After the event, Head Coach Mike Mangan was proud of his team, saying "Although we dealt with non-Florida weather, the Warriors adapted and overcame. We had some great debuts across multiple events."

The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, January 26th and 27th for the Alachua County Collegiate Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.
