Track & Field Kicks Off New Season with Jimmy Carnes Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (January 23, 2023) - The Webber International University men's and women's indoor track & field season is underway. The Warriors began their season Friday, January 13th, at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational.
 
The Warriors arrived early at the only indoor track facility in the state, on its opening day in Gainesville at the Alachua County Sportsplex. The facility will become the hub of all indoor track for youth, high school and college athletes. 
 
Freshman Rhet Conyers started the competition in the men's weight throw. He finished in third place with a throw of 13.63, which currently leaves him as the No. 4 thrower in The Sun Conference. Also contributing for the men was La'Trevious Williams and Caleb Balado Maldonado in the sprints and Micah Grooms in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay. Williams and Balado Maldonado finished 19th and 25th respectively, in the 60-meter preliminaries. The pair also finished 32nd and 36th respectively, in the 200-meters.

Junior Alexandrea Gaetz had the top performances on the women's side with personal bests in the high jump, long jump and 60-meter hurdles. Junior Alohna-Elyse Lee and Shanya Davidson also excelled in the 60 and 200-meter dashes. Junior Destinee Alford made the finals in the weight throw with a big early season throw. She finished in ninth place overall and second among NAIA-competitors.
 
Next up, the Warriors will be going back to Gainesville for the Alachua County University Invite on Friday, January 27th.
