BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 19, 2020) – After completing its 2021 Spring Game this past weekend, the Webber international University football program and new Head Coach
Eric Potochney have released their 2021 football schedule.
Coach Potochney, who is set to begin his first season as the head coach of the Warriors, is the third head coach in the history of the Webber Football Program. He takes over the reins from Coach
Kelly Scott, who announced his retirement as the leader of the Warriors earlier this year. Coach Scott finished his career with an overall record of 67-77 in 15 seasons as the head coach at Webber, but most recently in 2020, the Warriors finished the season with only one win in eight games and were 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division.
In addition to being its first season under Coach Potochney, 2021 will also be Webber's fifth season competing in the Mid-South Conference, which is the largest conference in all of college football, and will be its third season getting to play on the Warrior Turf Field.
"The coaching staff is pleased with the progress our team has made this Spring," said Potochney. "We have a good core group of returners coming back for next season and we are putting together a solid recruiting class for the Fall. Our players must work hard over the summer and this team will have to come together quickly in Fall camp in order to compete at a high level to match our scheduled competition. We look forward to the challenges that are ahead of this football program and are excited about the opportunity to compete against nationally-ranked opponents."
Webber's 2021 schedule is evenly split with five home games and five road games, including three at home and three on the road in the MSC Sun Division. Each of the Warriors' first two games of the season will be against nationally-ranked teams from the MSC Bluegrass Division.
In all, Webber will play five teams who are either currently nationally-ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Football FirstDown PlayBook Top 25 Poll. Additionally, three of those five teams are still playing this season in the First Round of the NAIA Football Championship Series.
The Warriors' 2021 campaign will begin on the road on Saturday, September 4, at Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.), which is currently ranked No. 3 in the NAIA and just claimed first place in the Bluegrass Division (7-0, 7-0). The Blue Raiders are now set to face No. 13 Bethel College (Kan.) in the NAIA Football Championship Series. The game between Webber and Lindsey Wilson next Fall will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
One week later, Webber's 2021 home opener will see the Warriors battle Georgetown College (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 11. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 14 in the NAIA after finishing second in the MSC Bluegrass Division (6-1, 6-1), and are set to face No. 5 Concordia University (Mich.) in the NAIA Football Championship Series. The all-time series between Webber and Georgetown is tied 1-1, although they have not played each other since a 27-20 win for the Warriors back during the 2010 season.
After its bye week followed by another road game against a team from the MSC Bluegrass Division (Sep. 25 at the University of Pikeville), the Warriors will open up MSC Sun Division action with back-to-back home games against Southeastern University on October 2, and then against St. Thomas University on October 9. Southeastern, which finished its 2020 season 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the division and defeated the Warriors 21-7 in Lakeland, Florida, are currently receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll. St. Thomas, meanwhile, finished third in the division last season at 4-3 and 3-2, and defeated Webber 31-13 in Miami Gardens, Florida, last season. The Warriors are 1-6 all-time against Southeastern and are 1-1 against St. Thomas.
Webber's first road game in the Sun Division will be on October 16 when the Warriors battle Ave Maria University, which finished last season fourth in the division at 3-4 and 2-3 and beat Webber 26-14. The Warriors currently hold a 7-3 advantage all-time against the Gyrenes.
The Warriors will remain on the road the following week (Oct. 23) to play at Keiser University in West Palm Beach Florida, and then will take a break from divisional play the week after that by hosting Faulkner University (Ala.) on October 30. Keiser finished 7-0 and 5-0 last Fall to claim its second straight MSC Sun Division Championship, and is now ranked No. 4 in the country while preparing to take on No. 15 Arizona Christian University in the NAIA Football Championship Series. Webber is 0-4 all-time against Keiser, including losses of 52-7 and 42-0 last season. Faulkner, meanwhile, finished in second place in the MSC Appalachian Division this past Spring at 6-2 and 5-1, and is receiving votes in the Top 25 Poll. Webber is only 2-5 all-time against Faulkner, but most recently defeated the Eagles 34-31 on the road back during the 2019 season.
Webber's final road game of the 2021 campaign will come on November 6 at Florida Memorial University, which was 0-3 and 0-1 last season before withdrawing from the remainder of the season due to COVID-19. The Warriors defeated the Lions 56-7 last year for their lone win of the season, but it was FMU's first season of varsity football competition after a 62-year hiatus.
Last but not least, the Warriors' 2021 regular-season slate will conclude at home against Crooked Lake rival Warner University during what will also be Webber's Senior Day. The Warriors lost twice to Warner last season, falling by scores of 24-17 at home and then 18-10 on the road, and fell behind the Royals in the all-time series between the two teams at only 4-5.
