BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 30, 2019) – The bracket and schedule for the 2019 Sun Conference Softball Championship have been set, and the Webber International University Warriors' softball team will play in the very first game of the tournament for the second year in a row. The Warriors will enter the tournament at the No. 4 seed against fifth-seeded Keiser University at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, at PFX Athletics Legends Way Ballfields at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
In its first season under new Head Coach
Kristy Burton, Webber (25-17 overall, 14-10 TSC) finished tied for third in The Sun Conference standings during the regular season after earning four Sun Conference sweeps. Additionally, the Warriors were 5-5 against top-25 teams in 2019, but were 5-3 against nationally-ranked teams from The Sun Conference. Webber also earned at least one win over all nine teams from the league.
Coach Burton said, "Wow what a season. We are so proud of this team. From August to May, they have been 100 percent bought into reaching out goals. It's amazing to see so much team growth in less than a year. We have worked through adversity time after time and through it all won some really big games."
After originally being picked to finish seventh out of nine and to miss the postseason in the conference's preseason poll, Webber made an appearance in the first regular-season edition of the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll on March 12 by receiving votes. Webber then rose to receiving the fourth most votes in the receiving votes category during the second regular-season poll on March 26, and kept receiving votes during the third poll on April 9.
The Warriors earned the four-game season sweep over Polk County rival Southeastern University, defeated Crooked Lake rival Warner University in three out of four meetings, and will now enter the postseason winning four of their last five games, including a victory over No. 20 the University of South Carolina Beaufort last Wednesday (April 24).
"I'm excited to see us leave it all out there in the postseason," added Burton. "Coach
Kendall Core and I are excited going to the postseason knowing that we have beaten every team in conference at least once. That's motivation alone knowing we have a huge shot at winning the tournament. We are excited to see all the teams fighting to extend their season."
On Senior Day on Saturday, April 27, Webber earned a huge sweep over the same Keiser team the Warriors will match up with during day one of the TSC Tournament. Keiser finished its regular season with a record of 27-19 overall and a mark of 13-11 in the TSC, one game behind the Warriors.
The winner of the Webber/Keiser matchup will move on to play the TSC Regular-Season Champion the College of Coastal Georgia (28-17, 16-8) at 4 p.m. on Thursday while the other team will move to the loser's bracket and play again at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3.
The tournament is a double-elimination format beginning with four games on Thursday. Five games are scheduled for Friday which will set up Saturday's championship matchup with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
"This is the best time of the year for softball, and we hope to see you all in Clermont as your Warriors fight to be conference champions," concluded Burton.
