Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Softball team battled through a tight start against Southeastern on Friday afternoon, but a late push by the Fire helped the visitors pull away as the Warriors fell 5-1 in the SUN Conference bout at Nancy Nichols Field.
Taylor Thomas kept Webber within striking distance early, opening the game with a clean first inning that included a strikeout. After three scoreless frames, Southeastern broke through in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Webber answered immediately in the bottom half, starting with Sommer Zier-Norris, who singled and advanced to second on an error. Thalia Romero followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position before Emma Newgent lifted a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Zier-Norris home to even the game at 1-1.
The game stayed tied until the sixth, when Southeastern used four hits and a pair of Webber defensive miscues to score three runs and move in front 4-1. The Fire added one more run in the seventh on an RBI double, creating the final 5-1 margin.
Zier-Norris and Romero accounted for Webber's two hits, with Romero's double marking the Warriors' lone extra-base hit. Newgent drove in Webber's run, while Alissa Aguirre also reached base with a walk. As a team, the Warriors finished with one run on two hits, one walk, and two runners left on base.
Thomas went the distance in the circle for Webber, throwing all seven innings. She allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out three and walking one. Defensively, Sami Franz led the Warriors with four putouts at shortstop, while Samantha Hudson added five behind the plate.
