Babson Park, FL — The Webber International Softball team split a non-conference softball doubleheader against the University of Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday afternoon, opening the day with a 5-0 shutout before dropping the second game by a 5-3 margin. The Warriors used a complete-game no-hitter from Taylor Thomas to cruise in the opener, then answered an early deficit with a three-run second inning in Game 2 before Fort Lauderdale pulled back in front for the split.
Webber broke through in the third inning of Game 1 and never looked back. With the Warriors still searching for the first run of the afternoon, Kaylee Phillips helped ignite the rally and came around to score as Webber grabbed a 2-0 lead. The Warriors added another run in the fourth, then created more separation in the fifth to build the lead to 5-0. That was more than enough support for Thomas, who kept Fort Lauderdale off the board and did not allow a hit across the seven-inning shutout. Webber finished the opener with eight hits and played error-free defense behind its starter in the circle.
Game 2 opened much differently, as Fort Lauderdale scored twice in the first inning and added another run in the second to move in front 3-0. Webber responded immediately in the bottom of the second with its best offensive stretch of the day. The Warriors pushed across all three of their runs in the frame to even the game, turning an early hole into a fresh start by the end of the inning. Fort Lauderdale, however, answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth and then kept Webber off the board over the final five innings to secure the 5-3 win.
Thomas headlined the day for Webber with the complete-game no-hitter in the opener, while the Warriors' offense produced five runs in Game 1 and three more in the nightcap. After the split, Webber came away with a strong first-game performance but could not complete the sweep after Fort Lauderdale's early offense
