Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – The non-conference schedule continued tonight as the Warriors took on the visiting Spring Arbor University Cougars. A wild 3
rd inning launched Webber ahead and led to the eventual 15-7 win.
GAME RECAP: Clayton & Saliba Homer, Burdett Earns First Win of the Season
With a 0-0 score going into the bottom of the 3
rd inning, the Cougars pitcher seemed to have lost control as 5 runs crossed the plate following 5 wild pitches. It wasn't until
Mark Martinez strolled up and singled into left field scoring
Connor Clayton that a run was earned giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead. Then, in the 4
th and 5
th innings, the Cougars woke up and used some momentum to cut the lead 6-5. Webber had another big inning in the bottom of the 6
th as
Matt Saliba hit a 2-run homerun deep out to left field scoring
Cristian Rivera. Clayton then doubled to center field scoring
Matt Piatt and
Sjaghbar Martis. Martinez shot a double into the right center gap that plated
Jesse Coleman and Clayton. Then
Garrett Martin was able to score on another past pall by the Cougars. This took the score to a commanding 13-5 lead for the Warriors. In the bottom of the 7
th,
Connor Clayton took a pitch deep to left field for his 2
nd homerun of the year, plating Piatt. Spring Arbor would scramble for 2 more runs in the 8
th inning, but it was not enough as the Warriors took the game 15-7.
STAT LINE: Connor Clayton had a massive night for Webber as he went 4-5 with a homerun and 2 doubles, just a triple shy of the cycle.
Mark Martinez went 3-4 with 2 RBI's.
Matt Saliba went 1-4 with a homerun. Getting the start for the Warriors was
Brad Burdett who threw 4 innings only giving up 5 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 6. In relief and finishing out the game was
Matthew Gulik throwing 2 innings and striking out 2,
Benjamin Feinman throwing 2 innings and striking out 2, then
Daniel Timmons finished off the Cougars throwing the top of the 9
th striking out 1.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Marcus Begg extended his hitting streak to 17 straight games.
Mark Martinez is hitting .538 through 7 games played with only 1 extra base hit.
Brad Burdett started and won his first game of the year today. The Warriors take on another team that is down in Florida from Michigan tomorrow, the Siena Heights University Saints. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the game is located at Webber's Heart of Florida Field.
