Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Baseball team took both games of its Sun Conference baseball doubleheader with New College of Florida on Friday, win 14-6 in the opener before an emphatic 13-1 win in the seven-inning nightcap.
In game one, the Warriors broke through with a four-run third, then added two in the fifth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh, and four more in the eighth to pull away for the eight-run victory. Webber finished with 14 runs on 13 hits, while holding New College to 10 hits.
Ty Mathews led the way in the opener, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Tugg Hollandsworth added three hits and two RBIs, while Steven Nitch reached base five times, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Skyler Schulz and David Zamora each chipped in two hits, and Jalen Martinez scored twice as part of the balanced offensive effort.
Mason Veronezi earned the win on the mound for Webber in game one, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing six runs, three earned, while striking out two. After New College closed within striking distance in the middle innings, the Warriors responded with a three-run sixth and then put the game away with a four-run eighth.
Webber carried that momentum into game two, despite surrendering a run in the top of the first. The Warriors answered with a five-run third, then kept piling on with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and three more in the sixth to cruise to the 13-1 victory. Webber scored 13 runs on nine hits, while its pitching staff limited New College to just one hit the entire game.
Mike Cuello and Kaleb Henry provided the biggest swings in the second game. Cuello launched a two-run homer in the fourth and scored three times, while Henry blasted a three-run homer in the fifth and drove in three. Will Gisriel added a two-run double, Steven Nitch doubled and drove in a run, and Tugg Hollandsworth collected two hits as Webber broke the game open.
On the mound, Caleb Fones was dominant, throwing five innings of one-hit ball without allowing an earned run while striking out five to earn the win. Austin Dobbins and Brandon Vazquez closed it out from there as Webber's staff combined for 10 strikeouts in the victory.
