Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Baseball team swept its Saturday doubleheader against Ave Maria, taking Game 1 by a 5-2 score before rolling to an 18-8 win in Game 2 at Babson Park. The Warriors got timely hits in the opener and then broke the nightcap open with a huge middle-innings surge to finish off the sweep. The sweep today means the Warriors swept the Gyrenes 4-0 in the series and secured back-to-back SUN Conference sweeps.
In the first game, Webber broke through in the bottom of the third. Tugg Hollandsworth came around to score when Mike Cuello blasted a two-run homer, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Webber added to it in the fourth when Nomar Vazquez singled in two runs, bringing home Kaleb Henry and Jalen Martinez for a 4-0 advantage. After Ave Maria scored twice in the eighth to make it a three-run game, the Warriors answered earlier with one more insurance run in the sixth when Tugg Hollandsworth delivered an RBI single to plate Nomar Vazquez.
Cuello finished Game 1 with two hits and two RBIs, while Hollandsworth had two hits and scored once. Vazquez drove in two runs, and Ryan Franklin set the tone on the mound with seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out five. Zach Hessler closed out the final two innings to secure the win.
Game 2 started quickly for the Warriors. In the first inning, Jalen Martinez singled up the middle to drive in Keegan Martin and Ty Mathews, giving Webber an early 2-0 lead. Ave Maria chipped away, but the Warriors answered in the fourth with another four-run burst. Mike Cuello singled in two runs, scoring Keegan Martin and David Zamora, and Martinez followed with a two-run double that brought home Mike Cuello and Ty Mathews to stretch the lead.
Webber put the game away in the fifth with a 10-run explosion. Ty Mathews singled home two runs, Mike Cuello added an RBI single, and Jalen Martinez drove in another run with a single. Later in the inning, Matty Davis singled in two more, Case McClelland doubled home a run, and Keegan Martin capped part of the rally with a two-run double. The Warriors then added two more runs in the sixth when Jalen Martinez singled in Mike Cuello and Austen Jaslove followed with an RBI single to score Will Gisriel.
Martinez led the Game 2 offense with four hits and six RBIs, while Keegan Martin went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Cuello drove in three, Mathews added two RBIs, and Webber piled up 18 hits in the win. Austin Dobbins earned the victory in relief as the Warriors completed the doubleheader sweep.
