Softball Sweeps Mount Mercy University

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University softball welcomed Mount Mercy University to Nancy Nichols Field, Monday. The Warriors played well in both games, winning7-0 and 2-1.

Laura Borders had a monster day, going 4-6 with three RBI and two homeruns. Alyssa Householder pushed her hitting streak to eight after going 3-6 with three RBI.

The Warriors deployed a pitching-by-committee style today, with three pitchers taking the mound in both games. Naomi Spurgron was strong, picking up the win in both games.

The Warriors dominated game one, scoring seven runs on 14 hits.

The Warriors kicked of the route in the third inning. Shanelly Brown led the inning off with a single and stolen base. Householder moved Brown to third with a well-placed sacrifice bunt. Brandi Hazen then fired a single to left center to break the deadlock. Borders stepped up next and crushed the ball over the center field wall, bring the score to 3-0.

Householder picked up a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the Warrior advantage to 5-0.

In the sixth, Webber International came close to evoking the mercy rule. Alex Luna capped off a strong debut with a RBI single up the middle. An Erika Bellinger bases-loaded grounder caused the short stop to freeze up with everyone reaching safely and putting the Warriors ahead, 7-0.

Webber International would go on to win, 7-0.

Borders' powerful bat proved the difference in a tightly contested game two.

For a second straight games, the Warriors waited till the third inning to get on the board. Katie O'Dell led the inning off with a single through the left side. Two sacrifices later, O'Dell had made her way to third. Householder put the ball in play, forcing the shortstop in to an error, allowing O'Dell to score and giving Webber International the, 1-0, lead.

Borders stepped into the batter's box to lead off the bottom of the fourth. After fouling the first pitch off, Borders launched the next pitch out of the park for a solo homerun.

Mount Mercy was able to pick up one run in the fifth, but the Warriors would hold on to win out, 2-1.
