Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Webber International University football traveled north, Saturday, for a game under light against, Sun Conference opponent, Southeastern. The Warriors went score-for-score with the conference's top offense, but two non-offensive scores would see Webber International fall to the Fire, 35-21.
Saturday's game marked the return of junior quarterback Billy Pavlock, who threw for 170 yards. Darius Page and Brendan Deshields both found the end zone against Southeastern, with Page positing a team-high 85-rush yards. On defense, the Warriors were able to shut down the Sun Conference's top rusher, while collecting 14 tackles for loss and two interceptions.
It was Webber International, who got on the board first. Deshields led the drive, running the ball four times, for 40 yards and a touchdown. Southeastern responded quickly, scoring on the very next drive. After the first 15 minutes, the teams were knotted up at 7-7.
The Fire opened the second quarter with a punt return for a touch down, to take its first lead at 14-7. Defense would dominate the quarter, with neither team able to wrestle control of the game. With two minutes left before halftime Southeastern was able to score again, sending the Warriors into the locker room down, 21-7.
Early on in the third quarter, A Pavlock pass was intercepted for a touchdown, pushing the Southeastern advantage to 28-7. The Warriors bounced right back, marching 86 yards down the field for a touchdown. Garry Chouloute was sharp on the drive, completing three passes, including a 32-yard strike and a touchdown to Tyler Modlin. On the very next drive Oscar McGee stopped a promising Southeastern drive with his first career interception.
The Warriors saw a punt get blocked at the open of the final quarter. The Fire capitalized on the short field, pushing its advantage to 35-14. Late in the final frame Page led a strong drive, taking a short pass for 24 yards and ripping off a 16-yard touchdown run to cut Southeastern's lead to 35-21. Webber International worked hard to mount a comeback but eventually lost, 35-21.
The Warriors are back in action, Saturday, November 7 when they host the New Port New Apprentice School.
