SAVANNAH, Ga. - Webber International University women's softball team eliminates Savannah College of Art and Design (2-1) and advance to the championship bracket to face local rivals, Warner Southern College, and take tough 7-2 loss in final game.
Entering into game one the Lady Warriors had to play the Bee's of Savannah College of Art and Design again for a final elimination match up. The Warriors started off strong again scoring their first run in the first inning with a base hit by senior Krysit DiMartino, and a double by senior Sara Harwood that brought in the Warriors first lead and run (1-0). The next time the Warriors put a run on the board was a solo homerun by senior Tara Wilson, her second of the tournament, for 2-0 lead over the Bee's.
The Bee's did put a run on the board in the third inning and had a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning, with two outs and the bases loaded. Bee's Whitney Hess battled at the plate against senior pitcher Kaysha Hillard fouling off several balls, but Hillard got Hess to foul off a finally ball to the catcher to end the game 2-1 Warriors.
The Warriors advanced to the championship game where they would play their local rivals, Warner Southern College. Knowing the Royals are undefeated in the tournament, the Warriors would have to play two seven inning games to win tournament and take the championship title.
Coming into their second game the Warriors knew they had to win the first game in order to stay in this tournament. Winning the coin toss the Royals chose to be the visiting team and hit first. Taking advantage of their choice the Royals scored four runs in the first and three more in the fifth, taking a big lead over the Warriors early in the game.
Webber did manage to put two runs on the board but it wasn't enough to do any damage towards the game. The Warriors ended up losing to their local rivals (7-2).
The Warriors were the no. 3 seeded team in tournament, eliminating the no. 2 seeded team and making their way to the championship brackets. Coming up short in their final game the Warriors ended their season with a 25-19 overall record. Also recognizing senior pitcher, Kaysha Hillard, who received nominations for the All-Conference and All-Region Teams.
