DAYTONA BEACH,, Fla. – The men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Daytona Beach to take part in the 42 event FSC track & field showdown, hosted by Embry-Riddle University.
The women's track and field team made history on Monday April 21, 2008, by winning the Florida Sun Conference track and field championship. Last year the lady Warriors finished second to conference foe Warner Southern by just two points, but in 2008 they would not be denied victory. The women tallied a total of 218 points to beat out conference foe Embry-Riddle by a total of 40 points, followed by Florida Memorial (105 points), Warner Southern (98 points) and Edward Waters (40 points).
"We were clicking on all cylinders, and the lady's were determined to win, after finishing second last year" commented Coach Griffin.
There were several elite performances produced by the Warriors. Juline Brice, who competed in four events the 10,000 (1st place), 800m (2nd), 1500m (2nd), and the 5000m (1st) scored a total of 36 points and was named FSC women's runner of the year. Anna Wallace competed in seven events scoring in six out of the seven and scoring a total of 32 ½ points. The events that she competed in were the 100 hurdles (2nd), 100m dash (3rd), triple jump (5th), long jump (2nd), 400H (3rd) and the 4x100m relay (1st). Sarah Long competed in four events, the 100m (2nd), 4x100m relay (1st) and 4x400m relay (2nd). Long also competed in the 200m dash qualifying for nationals with an "A" standard, and setting a new school record running 24.83 respectively.
On the men's side Embry-Riddle took first place (351 points), followed by Warner Southern (104 points), Edward Waters (86 points), Webber (85 points) and Florida Memorial (12 points).
James Campbell placed third in the 100m dash, third place in the 200m dash while also participating in the 4x400m relay (3rd) and the 4x100m relay (2nd). Steven Moroney and Chris Gaskins both competed in four races and secured points in all four. In the 10,000m they placed 5th & 6th, in the 3000m steeple chase they placed 3rd & 5th, in the 5,000m they placed 6th & 5th, and in the 1500m Gaskins placed 6th.
Josh Sanker placed second in the pole vault with a vault of 4.25m. Bavon Sylvain took home the gold in the long jump leaping to a first place finish of 6.19m. Sylvain also competed on the 4x100m relay (2nd) and on the 4x400m relay (2nd).
Tommy Chasanoff competed in the 800m run and set a personnel best by running 2:24.32, which surpasses his previous best by two seconds and gives him the national Paralympics trials standard.
"I am extremely proud of both the men's and women's team, they have worked hard all season long, balancing academics and athletics and now their hard work has paid off", said women's coach of the year Terrell Griffin.
