BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 24, 2023) – With Sun Conference tournament implications on the line, the Webber International University women's flag football team hosted rivals Warner University on Saturday. In a win-and-you're-in situation, the Warriors took a 27-13 victory over their bitter rivals to earn a spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
The Warriors (9-6 overall, 4-6 SUN) capitalized on solid defensive-play to limit the Royals (8-7, 3-7) to under 200 yards of total offense and three turnovers.
Warner had the ball to start the game, however, the opening drive was cut short thanks to an outstanding individual effort by
Jasmine Henry to swat an attempted pass in which she then intercepted and returned 35 yards the other way for the first points of the game. The Royals responded the very next drive with a touchdown of their own after a 10-play, 61-yard drive, that tied the game at 7-7.
With the final possession of the first quarter, Webber methodically moved the ball down the field and capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass from
Samantha Wilson to
Hayden Rupe to regain the lead at 14-7.
Both teams started the second quarter with a scoreless drive.
Breaza Robinson then intercepted a pass on the first play of the Royals' second drive of the quarter to gift possession to the Warriors in their own half. Five plays later, Wilson connected with
Kayla Burrows on a seven-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 20-7.
The Warriors scored once again in the third quarter as Robinson reeled in a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-7. Warner mustered a late score in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late as Webber punched its ticket to the postseason.
Wilson ended the game 30-of-37 for 195 passing yards and three touchdowns. Her leading receiver was Burrows with seven catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, which also puts her over the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards in a single season. She was followed by Robinson with five catches for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Burrows also led the team in flag pulls with seven on the day followed by Robinson with four and
Jada Dillard with three, including a sack. Robinson, Henry, and
Kaitlyn Sigmundi all recorded interceptions as well.
The Warriors will now travel to Thomas University to face the top-seeded Night Hawks in the semifinal of The Sun Conference tournament on Friday, April 28th.
