Women's Flag Football Suffers Road-Loss to Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 2, 2023) - The Webber International University women's flag football team traveled to South Florida to face off against St. Thomas University for the second time this season on Thursday night. The Warriors won the first matchup but were unable to match the Bobcats this time around as they suffered a 25-14 defeat.

It was a pretty even matchup as both the Warriors (7-4 overall, 3-4 SUN) and Bobcats (5-3, 3-3) each turned the ball over twice and were forced to punt four times. St. Thomas had the slight edge offensively as they totaled 272 yards of offense compared to the 212 of Webber.

The Bobcats received the ball to start the game and took no time getting themselves on the board as they drove 66 yards for a touchdown. Webber moved the ball well on its opening drive and got down to the STU seven-yard line before an interception gave possession back to the Bobcats. Trailing 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors were able to score on their first drive of quarter number two. Samantha Wilson connected with Hayden Rupe on a 36-yard gain to advance Webber into STU territory. Four plays later, Ciara Zino rushed in a touchdown from the one-yard line and after converting the ensuing point-after-attempt, tied the game at 7-7.

Later in the second quarter, St. Thomas responded with a four-play 47 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown, regaining the lead at 13-7. The Bobcats scored once again on their first drive of the second half to extend their lead even further to 19-7 heading into the final quarter of play. With just under two minutes left in the game, Kayla Burrows intercepted a pass in St. Thomas' half of the field to give Webber possession. Breaza Robinson reeled in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to cut the deficit to just five. However, the Bobcats drove down the field one last time to score a touchdown and seal their victory, 25-14.

Wilson completed 26 of her 36 pass attempts for a total of 181 yards and a touchdown. Zino earned the first rushing touchdown of her career while Rupe led the team in receiving yards with 65 on four catches. She was followed by Burrows with a team-high eight receptions for 55 yards and Robinson with four catches for 19 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Burrows tallied five flag pulls and recorded an interception as well. Kaitlyn Sigmundi tallied her third interception of the season at the safety position. Robinson and Emma Balacco led the team in flag pulls with six each followed by Jasmine Henry with three and Sammy Gonzalez and Nadia Arroyo with two apiece.

The Warriors will now return home to host Campbellsville University for their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, April 4th at 2 p.m. on the Warrior Grass Field. Webber shutout Campbellsville earlier this season on the road, 27-0.
