Warriors Outlast Lions in Defensive Battle, 12-7

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 30, 2023) – The Webber International University women's flag football team hosted Florida Memorial University on the Warrior Grass Field, Wednesday afternoon. A late fourth-quarter interception by the Warrior defense sealed a tight 12-7 victory over the Lions.

The Warriors (7-3 overall, 3-3 SUN) recorded 342 yards of total offense and held the Lions (1-6, 0-6) to just over 200 on the defensive end.

After a turnover on downs on the opening drive of the game, Webber forced FMU to punt after a three-and-out. On the ensuing drive, Samantha Wilson found Kaitlyn Sigmundi wide open for a 20-yard gain to enter Lion territory. The Warriors continued to drive and scored on a four-yard pass to Hayden Rupe, capping a 10-play, 52-yard drive for the first points of the game.

Webber's defense stood strong on FMU's next two drives, resulting in a punt and a turnover on downs. The Lion's final offensive drive of the half was cut short by an interception from Breaza Robinson. The Warriors were unable to cash in on the forced turnover, unfortunately, as they ran out of time before the half.

Neither team scored on their opening drives of the second half. Starting from their own 12-yard line, Webber went on a six-play, 68-yard drive after Wilson connected with Kayla Burrows on a 51-yard touchdown pass. Burrows made the catch near the sideline and outpaced the defense the rest of the way to extend the lead to 12-0.

FMU responded by scoring on six-plays of its own after taking multiple shots down-field. The Lions converted the point-after-attempt to make it 12-7.

Later in the fourth quarter, the Lions were driving down the field into the Warriors half of the field, threatening to score. A big-time interception by Robinson for her second of the game, gave possession back to Webber with just over a minute remaining, The Warriors were able to run out the remainder of the clock to seal the victory.

Webber will now play in its second game in as many days as it travels to St. Thomas University for the second matchup of the year against the Bobcats. Warriors took a 37-14 victory the first time around and will be looking to get above .500 in Sun Conference play. The game is set for Thursday, March 30th at 6 p.m.
