Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Martin drills three-pointer in final seconds to down Nighthawks

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 13, 2022) - The Webber International University men's basketball team faced the Thomas University Nighthawks for the second time this season, this time at home. The game came down to the wire but a clutch three-point shot from Tiyon Martin in the final seconds would earn the Warriors the victory and put an end to the eight-game losing streak.

Both the Warriors (8-18 overall, 3-11 SUN) and the Nighthawks (10-15, 4-11) shot 43.1 percent from the field in the game. Webber shot slightly better from three-point range at 42.9 percent compared to Thomas' 35 percent. It was a tight game from start to finish with a total of 10 lead changes.

With just under eight minutes to go in the first half, the Warriors would hold a five-point lead at 27-22. However, the Nighthawks would go on a 14-7 run to end the half, taking the lead and entering halftime up 36-34. Webber would pick up the pace offensively to start the second half, going on a 20-4 run over the first eight minutes to earn itself a 14-point lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. With 10 minutes left, the Warriors still held their 14-point lead at 59-45. Thomas would begin to whittle away at the deficit and eventually knot the game up at 68-68 with 19 seconds remaining. With the shot clock off, the Warriors would slowly bring the ball over half court and run the clock for the final possession of the game. Martin would pull up for three with a defender in his face, sinking the shot and giving Webber a three-point lead with two seconds remaining. Thomas would inbound the ball and attempt a desperation shot but it would be no good.

Webber was led by Jaylon Myles who finished with 19 points, six rebounds and two steals. He was followed by Benjamin Ross with 11 points and six rebounds and Marcus Massey with 10 points and two blocks. Gabriel Divic contributed with eight points, five rebounds, and two steals while Chinecherem Anukaenyi led the team with 12 total rebounds followed by Jordan Golden with nine.

"Great win over a tough team in Thomas University," Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge spoke after the game. "Our guys showed great heart battling throughout the game. Multiple guys made winning plays on both ends of the floor. My assistants did a great job at making sure we were prepared. We will continue to build a strong program. Thank you to all of the fans and cheerleaders who continue to show support. Go Warriors!"

The Warriors will now travel to St. Thomas University for their final road matchup of the season on Thursday, February 17th, at 7:30 p.m. The team then returns home for its Senior Day and regular-season finale on Saturday, February 19th, at 4 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
