Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors slip up late in road match against Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 17, 2022) - The Webber International University men's basketball team traveled to St. Thomas University for its final road game of the regular season on Thursday night. After falling to the Bobcats earlier in the year at home, the Warriors hung tough and led for the majority of the game but ultimately fell short in the final minutes, 70-68.

Both the Warriors (8-19 overall, 3-12 SUN) and Bobcats (13-9, 10-6) shot a similar field goal percentage, although Webber shot slightly better from three-point range. The Warriors also outrebounded their opponents 49-40 in total for the game, however, St. Thomas was more efficient in converting points off turnovers.

It was a tightly contested first half as neither team could seem to really pull away. Down by one with just over three minutes remaining in the half, the Warriors would hit back-to-back three-points shots, first from Tiyon Martin and then from Jaylon Myles to gain a five-point lead. Less than 20 seconds later, the Bobcats would respond with a three of their own to cut the lead to just two and that is how the teams would enter the halftime break.

The Warriors would come out strong in the second half, going on 21-12 run in the first seven minutes and 15 seconds of the second half. Webber would lead by as many as 11 points with roughly 13 minutes remaining in the game. The Bobcats would steadily chip away at the Warrior-lead over the next 10 minutes, before a layup would tie the game up at 66-66 with 2:24 left on the clock. The two teams would trade baskets, tying the game at 68 with just over a minute left. St. Thomas would convert one of two free throw attempts to take a one point lead with 34 seconds. A three-point attempt from the Warriors with 17 seconds left would be no good and they would be forced to foul. The Bobcats would convert another free throw and see out its 70-68 victory.

Martin led the Warriors offensively with 22 points in his 27 minutes of action. He also converted four of his five attempted three-point shots while adding two assists and a steal. He was followed by Myles who scored 17 points, 11 of which came in the first half, and grabbed six rebounds. Benjamin Ross finished with nine points while Loro Natana tallied eight points and six rebounds. Chinecherem Anukaenyi tallied a team-high 13 rebounds and two blocks followed closely by Jordan Golden who tied his season-high of 11 rebounds.

The Warriors will now return home for their Senior Day and regular-season finale against Florida Memorial University on Saturday, February 19, at 4 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
