Warriors take down Coastal Georgia in Sun Conference clash

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 6, 2022) – Although the Webber International University men's basketball team led from start to finish, it was a hard fought victory over the visiting Mariners of Coastal Georgia on Thursday night.

The Warriors (7-10 overall, 2-3 SUN) shot 46.6 percent from the field while also making 26 trips to the free throw line, 23 of which came in the second half. They capitalized from the charity stripe shooting 95.7 percent from the line in the second half and 88.5 percent in total for the game. Webber did well on the boards, outrebounding the Mariners (5-8, 0-6) 38-33.

Webber started the game off strong, going on a 12-0 run in the first four minutes. Coastal Georgia would battle back throughout the half, cutting the lead to just three points with just under two and a half minutes before halftime. However, that is as close as the Mariners would come for the rest of the game.

After holding a five-point lead at the break, the Warriors would continue to build upon their lead in the second half. They were aided by the free throw line, making 22 of their 23 attempted free throws. Jaylon Myles finished the second half with 16 points and was perfect from the free throw line.

Myles led the team with a total of 24 points on 50 percent shooting. He was followed by Gabriel Divic who came off the bench to score 11 points in 18 minutes of play, nine of which came in the first half. Loro Natana finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds, making him one rebound shy of his second double-double of the season.

Justin Boyd led the team with three steals while Tiyon Martin had two and added a team-high five assists.

"I'm proud of our guys for competing for 40 minutes and getting a great team win," Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge said after the game. "We try to pride ourselves on playing great defense and sharing the ball on offense. We did that very well tonight. It's exciting to see what we can do when we play hard and make shots. I thought our bench did a great job at bringing positive energy and making plays when their numbers were called. I am very proud of our team for battling a well-coached team in Coastal Georgia. We will enjoy this win tonight and start preparing for the battle against Thomas this Saturday".

Webber now travels to Thomas University to face the Night Hawks on Saturday, January 8, at 4 p.m. The team then has a four-day break before traveling to South Florida to battle the Florida Memorial Lions on January 13.
