BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 4, 2022) – The Webber International University men's basketball team hosted the Bruins of Bob Jones University on Tuesday evening for its first game in over two weeks. The Warriors earned their first win of the new year with a 75-59 victory.
The Warriors (6-10 overall) led the game from start to finish and shot the ball well with a field goal percentage of 46.3 while limiting the Bruins (4-7) to 33.3 percent shooting from the field. They also asserted their dominance in the paint, outscoring the opponents 38-18 in total.
Webber would take an early lead and hold onto it for the majority of the first half. The Bruins would tie the game at 29 with 1:24 remaining in the half. However, the Warriors would go on a 7-0 run to end the half to lead 36-29 at the half.
Starting the second half, the Warriors would pick up where they left off, adding to their lead. Webber led by as much as 18 points, seeing out the first victory of 2022.
Jaylon Myles and
Tiyon Martin led the way in terms of scoring with 17 points apiece while Martin also led the team with a season-high eight assists.
Jordan Golden finished with 12 points while he and
Loro Natana led the team with seven rebounds.
Justin Boyd followed close behind with six rebounds of his own.
Defensively,
Gabriel Divic and Natana led the team with three blocks each while Boyd grabbed four steals.
"It was a good team win," said Head Coach
Gabriel Rutledge. "Good to be back on the court after a bit of a break. After a slow start on the offensive end, we started to lock in defensively as the game progressed. We now shift our focus to preparing for conference play this Thursday against Coastal Georgia. Go Warriors."
The Warriors have now concluded their non-conference play and will now face College of Coastal Georgia on Thursday, January 6, at 7:30 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Webber then hits the road to play Thomas University on Saturday, January 8.
