BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 5, 2021) - In a game that had several momentum swings and ultimately came down to the final five seconds, the Webber International University men's basketball team suffered defeat to the hands of the Keiser Seahawks on Saturday evening in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Seahawks (4-5 overall, 3-3 SUN) led by as much as 11 points just eight minutes into the game. However, the Warriors (4-8, 1-3) battled back to within three at the halftime break and then went on to lead by as much as seven points with 14 minutes to go. It then became neck and neck as the two teams battled with the score being tied 14 times throughout the game.
Two successful free throws from Keiser would award them the 73-71 lead over the Warriors with just over three minutes left in the game. A layup from
Loro Natana with 1:44 on the clock would even the game yet again. The teams would trade layups on consecutive possessions to keep the game tied at 75 a piece with one minute remaining. The Seahawks would hit a deep three-pointer from the elbow to regain the lead at 78-75 with 46 seconds left but the Warriors would not go away.
A missed three-point shot from Webber would be collected by Natana and dished out to
Jaylon Myles who would pump fake to send the defender flying past him, allowing him a wide open three-point shot that would hit the mark, tying the game at 78 with 29 seconds left. The Seahawks would respond with yet another three-point shot from the top of the key with just five seconds to go. The Warriors would have one last chance at a buzzer-beating three to try and force overtime but it would be unsuccessful.
"Tough road loss against the defending conference champions", said Head Coach
Gabriel Rutledge. "I thought we did a great job with the preparation after a quick turnaround and being mentally prepared for the game. Unfortunately, our slow start put us behind throughout the first half. We will continue to take steps forward and grow as men to make winning plays late in the game. Go Warriors."
The Warriors were led offensively by Myles with a season-high 30 points as well as a career-high 19 points from
Justin Boyd. The pair combined to score 10 of the Warriors' 11 total three-pointers in the game. Myles also collected a game-high four steals on the defensive end, while Boyd and
Tiyon Martin each had three. Martin had a quiet game offensively but was able to be a supplier, leading Webber with six assists in the game.
Chinecherem Anukaenyi finished with a near double-double, tallying nine points and eight rebounds on the day.
Webber now takes a break from Sun Conference action as its next six games will be non-conference matchups, including an exhibition game against Division-I Jacksonville University. First, they will return home as they face Florida College for the second time in the 2021-22 season. The first matchup ended in a 79-53 defeat for the Warriors on the road. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 9, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
