Warriors extinguish the Fire to earn first Sun Conference victory

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 2, 2021) – A huge first half offensively fueled the Webber International University men's basketball team to its first Sun Conference victory of the 2021-22 season over the nationally recognized Southeastern Fire on Thursday night.

The Warriors (4-7 overall, 1-2 SUN) started the first half red hot offensively, hitting 10 three-pointers in the first 11 minutes of the game. Webber shot an astounding 62.5 percent from beyond the arch in the first half.

With nine minutes left in the half, the Warriors held a 20-point lead over Southeastern. The Fire would chip away at the deficit and head into halftime own by 10 at 52-42.

Webber cooled off offensively in the second half, shooting only one for 11 from three-point range and 35.5 percent in total. Holding a 12-point lead with just over two and a half minutes to go, the Fire would push for a comeback, going on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to just four with 46 seconds left.

Terrence Lakes would convert two free-throws to make it a six-point game with just under 40 seconds left in the game. The Fire would hit a deep, contested three point shot to come within three points. Southeastern would be forced to foul and Loro Natana would convert a free-throw to make it a four-point game with 10 seconds to go, virtually sealing the win for the Warriors.

Jaylon Myles finished with 23 points, converting four of his nine attempted shots from downtown. Myles also added four rebounds, four assists, and four steals to his credit. He was followed by Jordan Golden with 12 points on 71.4 percent shooting from the field as well as adding six rebounds.

Tiyon Martin finished with a game-high five assists to go with his eight points. Chinecherem Anukaenyi collected 10 boards while adding eight points and a block.

"Incredible team win tonight," Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge said after the game. "We stood toe to toe for 40 minutes against one of the best teams in the country and showed what it means to be a Warrior. Our guys showed great heart and resilience on the defensive end. It was also nice to see multiple guys make big shots in the first half. I'm very proud of Jaylon (Myles) for playing one of his best games of the year both offensively and defensively. I want to thank all of the students and cheerleaders who came out and supported us. Go Warriors!"

It's back-to-back Sun Conference action for the Warriors as they now travel to Keiser University to face the Seahawks on Saturday, December 4, at 4 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Florida.
