Warriors' slow start leads to defeat against Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (November 27, 2021) - The Webber International University man's basketball team traveled to Kentucky to participate in the Cambellsville University Thanksgiving Classic where it first matched up against the hometown Tigers of CampbellsvilleĀ on Friday night. A slow first half from the Warriors created a deficit that they would be unable to overcome, leading to a 79-60 defeat.

The Warriors (3-6 overall) were competitive on the boards, being only slightly out-rebounded by the Tigers (6-3) 40-39. Both teams forced an equal number of turnovers in the game with 14 as well. However, shooting percentage is what ultimately made the difference as Campbellsville shot 47.5 percent in the game while the Warriors shot just 35.3 percent.

Webber started the first half slowly offensively, scoring just 22 points in total and no player scored more than four the whole half. The Warriors shot just under 35 percent from the field while the Tigers scored 41 on 48.6 percent shooting. Campbellsville was able to jump out to a 19-point lead at the half and did enough in the second half to stave off any efforts of a comeback attempt from the Warriors.

Loro Natana led the Warriors in both points with 13 and rebounds with nine, one rebound shy of a double-double. He was followed by Jaylon Myles and Terrence Lakes who each scored 10 points in total. The pair also led the team in terms of assists with four each.

Leading the way defensively, was Tiyon Martin and Lakes who grabbed two steals apiece. Chinecherem Anukaenyi, Gabriel Divic, and Gavin Buchanon all tallied a block as well.

Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge spoke after the match saying, "Disappointing outcome tonight. I thought we had a great week of preparation and showed areas of growth throughoutĀ the long trip but unfortunately, we failed to show it in the first half. We will continue to grow in areas of weakness and hopefully, show up ready to play. In order to be a great team, we must be willing to sacrifice more for each other, while also raising the standards of our program. Go Warriors."

The Warriors now face Lindsey Wilson College as their second and final game within the CU Thanksgiving Classic. The game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, inside the Powell Athletic Center at Campbellsville University.
