Warriors earn huge victory over No. 22 St. Thomas to remain undefeated

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 8, 2021) – For the first time in the 2021 season, the Webber International University women's soccer team matched up against top-25 opposition, in the form of No. 22 nationally-ranked St. Thomas University, earning a 2-1 victory in overtime over the Bobcats on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors (8-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 SUN) earned their eighth win of the season thus far and the fifth win in a row, to remain unbeaten.

"It was an absolutely fantastic result for our program as well as our players," spoke Head Women's Soccer Coach Erik Casterline. "We could not be more proud to lead this group of young women. They were very disciplined throughout the match and their grit and determination led to us finding a way to pull out the win. Credit to St. Thomas who are extremely well coached and have a great team. We wish them luck the rest of the way."

The Bobcats (6-2-2, 1-1-1) outshot the Warriors 24-5 in the match but goalkeeper Natalie Bartek made nine saves in total including one in overtime to help them to the victory.

The match would remain scoreless for the first 77 minutes until Webber would find itself with a counter-attacking opportunity in which Domenica Pena would play in Brazil Clark who would drive into the box and take it around the keeper for a simple tap in.

St. Thomas would find an equalizer roughly five minutes later following a corner kick. They would have a chance to win the match with under two minutes to go but Bartek would make a vital save on the goal line to force overtime.

Just over three minutes into overtime, the Warriors would earn a penalty shot. B. Clark would step up and fire the ball past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper, diving to her right, to end the match 2-1.

The Warriors next match will be on the road as they travel to Miami Gardens, Florida to take on Florida Memorial on Saturday, October 9, at 11 a.m.
