BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 28, 2020) – 14 pairs participated in the first ever Webber International University Invitational this past Friday, September 25, with great competition and matches taking place throughout the afternoon.
The event included both the Webber men's beach volleyball team as well as the Webber women's beach team along with some former Webber beach alumni that were invited to participate. The event was cut short due to weather conditions in the area, but winners were able to be selected from the rankings after pool play.
Chris Ludwig and
Montana-Rae Pelak took first place and
Steven Bartlett and Tammy Needham took second place. Coach
Carlos Jimenez and the Warriors look forward to making this an annual event for the men's beach team going forward.
The men's beach volleyball team also participated in the Tampa Bay Beach Bums event held in Clearwater, Florida, on Saturday, September 26. The open division was a very competitive draw and was the first event for
Chris Ludwig and
Peyten Young playing together as a team. The duo of Ludwig and Young managed to place fifth at the end of the day.
Daniel Hermida and
Jack Sukeena played in the AA Division and finished in first place. The pair has been playing together for a few weeks now and their strategy for the event paid off with effective blocking from Hermida and aggressive defense from Sukeena.
Austin Strickler and
Eduardo Ramos played their first event together in the A Division, and both freshman had great chemistry on the court. They lost in the semifinals and tied for third place.
Kevin McCarthy and
Sabian Cardona Martinez missed the playoffs by a very narrow margin in points in the AA Division, and
Justin Beecher lost in the first round of the playoffs in the AA Division after his regular partner (Bartlett) was unavailable for the event.
