Women’s basketball puts five-game winning streak on the line against No. 1 Southeastern

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 7, 2020) – On Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m., the streaking Webber International University women's basketball team will put its five-game Sun Conference winning streak to the test against the No. 1-ranked team in NAIA Division-II women's basketball, Southeastern University, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Since the beginning of January, Webber (15-9 overall, 9-5 TSC) has been one of the hottest teams in all of The Sun Conference outside of the undefeated Fire. Webber is now 8-1 since earning a 74-56 victory on the road at Johnson & Wales University on January 4, vaulting the Warriors all the way up to fourth place in The Sun Conference women's basketball standings. Additionally, the Warriors are 11-3 dating back to a 90-60 victory at Florida College back on December 13.

Southeastern (22-2, 14-0), meanwhile, has won 21 straight games this season dating back to November 1 when the Fire narrowly lost back-to-back games against teams ranked No. 1 and No. 4 in the country at the time. Since then, Southeastern has won games against the No. 1, No. 13 and No. 24 ranked teams in the nation and is 4-2 overall on the season against nationally-ranked teams.

Collectively, the Fire are leading NAIA Division-II women's basketball in several categories with only two weeks remaining in the regular season. They rank first in scoring defense per game (52.08), scoring margin (37.17), field goal percentage defense (.308 percent) and field goal percentage (.506 percent). Webber, meanwhile, is all about defense and rebounding, ranking 11th in the country in field goal percentage defense (.352 percent), 13th in rebounds per game (44.17), 15th in total blocks (95) and blocks per game (3.96), 18th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.273 percent), 28th in total steals (271), and is 37th in scoring defense per game (62.92 points per game).

Individually for the Warriors, sophomore Taniya Patrick ranks fourth in the country in blocks per game (2.54) and in total blocks (61), and she is 20th in field goal percentage (.545 percent), 31st in offensive rebounds per game (3.29) and 36th in total rebounds (205). Junior LeAndra Franklin, meanwhile, is sixth in total steals (77) and is 27th in total assists (95). For Southeastern, Taylah Simmons ranks first nationally in both points per game (23.38) and in total scoring (561 points).

Southeastern, ranked No. 2 at the time, defeated the Warriors in their last matchup on December 5, in Lakeland, Florida, by a score of 97-48. Sophomore Amaya Lasley scored a career-high 17 points in that first meeting while Patrick added 14 points.

Join us at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Sabbagh Athletic Center as the Warriors look to take down the Fire for the first time in The Sun Conference play since October of 2016.
