Warrior softball adds two more wins at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. (February 25, 2020) – The Webber International University softball team won both of its games on Tuesday at The Spring Games played at PFX Athletics Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida, improving to a very impressive 11-1 on the season so far. The Warriors defeated Point Park University (Pa.) 8-1 in their first game of the day before taking down Mount Vernon Nazarene University 11-3 in six innings.

COACH'S CORNER: "It was a fun Tuesday for our Warrior softball team," said Head Coach Kristy Burton. "We had two complete team wins today for our program. Everyone was thankful and ready to be back in the warm Florida weather. It was great to see our bats continue to stay hot while our pitching staff continues to work hard to keep us in every game. We were able to control the tempo in both games thanks to our aggressive at bats. We are now looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at Nancy Nichols field for our games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m."

Game 1 (Webber 8, Point Park 1)
  • Sabrina Hebding (2-0) earned her first complete game victory of the season allowing six hits, one run and one walk through all seven innings.
  • Offensively, Abigail Thompson was 3-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored while Kaitlin Cockcroft and Cassidy Roberts also both scored twice.
  • Alyssa Rodriguez came up with a two-run double to center with two outs in the top of the fourth to put the Warriors ahead 5-0.
  • In all, the Warriors put together three straight multi-run innings beginning in the top of the third to go ahead 8-0.

Game 2 (Webber 11, Mount Vernon Nazarene 3 – six innings):
  • Webber scored four runs in each of the first two innings of the game and for the second game in a row, had a stretch of three straight multi-run innings to lead it 10-1 after three.
  • The big blow of the first inning for the Warriors came from Samantha Rolfe, who drove in two runs with a double before later scoring herself on a wild pitch.
  • The run for Webber that ended things one half inning early in the bottom of the sixth came as Rolfe led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Cassidy Roberts, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Daisy Riggleman, and then scored on a groundout by Krista Hoyt.
  • Mary-Margaret Maggard was 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, and Roberts was 2-for-3.
  • In addition to Maggard, Kelsea Friend, Rolfe and Abigail Thompson all scored twice.
  • Raven White (4-0) earned the win pitching the first four innings of the game while giving up six hits and three runs, but only one earned run, before Dariyen Moss finished off the final two innings allowing only two hits, no walks and no runs.

NEXT UP: Webber will return to its home field for the first time since its season opener back on February 5 as this time, the Warriors host Florida National University at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26.
