Maitland strikes out 11 in game one as Warriors sweep CCSJ at home

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 29, 2020) – The Webber International University softball team used two strong pitching performances to sweep Calumet College of St. Joseph 6-2 and 4-2 and improve to 13-1 overall and 4-0 at home to start its 2020 campaign.

In the first game of the day on Saturday, Emma Maitland improved to 5-0 with her fourth complete game victory of the season. She finished with only two hits, two total runs and one earned run allowed with two walks across all seven innings.

Maitland also struck out a career-high 11 batters and had a no-hitter going through the first three innings. After a leadoff double to the top of the fourth for CCSJ, Maitland stranded the runner on third base with no outs.

In game two, Sabrina Hebding (3-0) allowed seven hits, two runs and one walk through the first 6.1 innings before Dariyen Moss earned her first career save by recording the final two outs.

Offensively for the Warriors, Samantha Rolfe was 3-for-4 with two RBI's in game one while Mary-Margaret Maggard was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored. Victoria Atkinson also scored twice while matching Maggard with a double.

In the second game, Maggard was 2-for-3 while Kelsea Friend scored twice.

"What an honor to take away two wins today," spoke Head Coach Kristy Burton. "We were blessed to be able to recognize Coach G by allowing him to throw out the first pitch and dedicating our home dugout to him. The girls came out to play for him and all the work he has done for our program. I am very proud of the pitching staff as a whole. Emma, Sabrina, Dariyen, and Raven hold each other accountable and are present in every game. Offensively, we continue to control the tempo in each game allowing us to have fun and score early which frees us up to just play ball. We are proud of this team and looking forward to this challenging schedule the next few weeks."

Next up will be two neutral games as Webber travels to Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Florida, for two games on Wednesday, March 4. The Warriors will battle Siena Heights University (Mich.) at 10 a.m. before taking on No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan University at 2:30 p.m.
