WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (September 6, 2019) – The Webber International University football team will take the field as the home team for the first time in 2019 tomorrow on Saturday, September 7, as the Warriors host Union College (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. inside Denison Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida.
It will be the only game at Denison Stadium this year for Webber as the Warriors are set to transition to their new home turf field for the start of Mid-South Conference Sun Division play against St. Thomas University on Saturday, October 5.
Despite a rough go of it offensively for the Warriors in their 2019 season opener two weeks ago on Saturday, August 24, a 16-6 loss at No. 10 Reinhardt University, the Webber defense was as strong as ever. Webber forced two turnovers while holding the Eagles to only three points throughout the first half and doing enough to keep the Warriors within striking distance until the fourth quarter.
Webber will now look to rebound and get into the win column against Union on Saturday.
During Webber's 2018 campaign, the Warriors defeated Union 27-9 on Saturday, September 22, to improve to 4-0 for the first time in program history. The Warriors finished the contest by scoring 27 unanswered points starting with under four minutes left in the second quarter.
Webber will now be looking for its third win in a row over Union this Saturday as the Warriors currently lead the all-time series with the Bulldogs 2-1. Ironically, the visiting team has won every game in the series thus far. Union won the inaugural showdown 10-7 in 2012 before Webber won 20-19 in 2013 and 27-9 last season.
Union, meanwhile, is 0-1 so far in 2019 after a 44-7 loss at NCAA Division-I Morehead State University on August 29. The 37-point margin is the closest Union has been in any of its previous games versus Division-I opponents.
In 2018, Union went 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the MSC Appalachian Division, and at one point lost seven games in a row. The Bulldogs allowed opponents to score 50 or more points against them four times last season and gave up 60 or more points twice.
Webber, on the other hand, had a pretty strong 2018 campaign as the Warriors finished 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the MSC Sun Division to take fourth place in the division. The seven wins tied a program record that has now been accomplished three times by the Warriors under Head Coach
Kelly Scott.
In addition to starting 4-0 for the first time in program history, the Warriors also held nationally rankings as high as No. 23 and No. 22 throughout the year in 2018. Near the end of the season, Webber defeated the final unbeaten team in the Sun Division, Ave Maria University, 20-17 in overtime during a game that was also the Warriors' Senior Day.
