BABSON PARK Fla. (March 7, 2018) – The Webber International University women's tennis team won its second straight match with a 6-3 victory over NCAA Division-II Southwest Minnesota State University while the Warriors' men's tennis team was defeated by another NCAA D-II school, Bentley University, by the same score of 6-3 on Wednesday on Webber's Campus Tennis Courts.

Earning singles victories for the second straight match was Emily John at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), Isabelle Niehoff in the No. 2 spot (6-4, 6-2), Jenna Fosdick at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-2), Svenja Koenig at No. 4 singles (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 with 10-5 tiebreaker) and Juliana Fuentes in the No. 5 position (7-6 with 10-8 tiebreaker, 6-3).

In doubles, Niehoff and Koenig were victorious by a score of 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while Alissa Riedel and Fuentes fell 8-6 in a close match at No. 3 doubles. Riedel also fell in two close sets at No. 6 singles, dropping the two frames by scores of 7-5 and 6-4.

Webber women's tennis saw its record improve to 3-5 overall while Southwest Minnesota State fell to 4-9.

On the men's side, Webber (2-5) nearly pulled off the upset over Bentley (7-4), dropping three super tiebreakers in singles play as Ivan Bonderanko (No. 2 singles), Matthew Alexander (No. 3 singles) and Marc Schneider (No. 4 singles) each won their first set before dropping the second and falling 1-0 in the third.

The wildest super tiebreaker came courtesy of Alexander and his opponent Dylan Granat. After winning the first set 2-6 and dropping the second 6-1, Alexander battled all the way back from a 9-1 deficit in the tiebreaker to set up a back-and-forth rally that continued until the 40th point when Granat finally won by a score of 20-18.

At No. 2 singles, Bonderanko won the opening set 4-6, lost the second 6-2 and then fell 10-5 in the tiebreaker. Schneider, at No 3 singles, won his first set 2-6, fell 6-2 in the second and then dropped a heartbreaking 10-8 decision in the tiebreaker.

Hugo Hasegawa improved his winning streak at No. 1 singles to five straight matches as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

The Warriors actually led 2-1 at the end of doubles action as Hasegawa and Bonderanko were 8-6 winners in the No. 1 spot while Alexander and Schneider won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Hasegawa and Bondernako have now teamed up for four straight wins at No. 1 doubles and are 6-1 as a duo overall.

Next up, Webber men's tennis will battle NCAA Division-I Radford University in a neutral match at the National Tennis Center in Lake Nona, Florida, on Friday, March 9, at 12 p.m. On the same date, the Warriors' women's tennis team will host Aquinas College (Mich.) in Babson Park, Florida, at 3 p.m. Webber's spring break trip to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina will immediately follow.
