BRUNSWICK, Ga. (March 28, 2018) – The Webber International University women's and men's tennis teams both fell to the College of Coastal Georgia in their last Sun Conference matches of the 2018 season. The Lady Warriors fell just short 5-4 in a match that decided their TSC playoff bid, while the men lost 8-1 to the No. 18 Mariners.
In addition to its men's team being nationally ranked, the Coastal Georgia women are receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll as well.
In women's tennis, the Warriors No. 1 player,
Emily John, defeated the Mariners' Jasmine Carswell 6-4, 6-3; No. 3
Jenna Fosdick defeated Sonja Wind 6-1, 6-3; and No. 5
Juliana Fuentes defeated Paige DeLaPerriere in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to split with Coastal Georgia 3-3 in singles action.
The deciding factor in the women's match was doubles action, where Webber dropped two of the three bouts with only the No. 2 doubles duo of
Isabelle Niehoff and
Svenja Koenig winning 8-6.
The men's tennis team only had one victor as Webbers' No. 2 player
Ivan Bonderanko won convincingly 6-1, 6-0 in singles action.
In men's doubles, all three duos lost in tight matchups as No. 1
Hugo Hasegawa and Bonderanko lost 8-6, No. 2
Matthew Alexander and
Kyle Hall fell 8-5, and No. 3
Marc Schneider and
Lucas Bingenheimer lost 8-6 as well.
The Webber women fell to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in The Sun Conference while the Coastal Georgia women improved to 5-12 and 4-3. Meanwhile, the Warrior men fell to 5-11 and 2-5 and the Mariner men improved to 10-6 and 6-1.
Webber heads home on Thursday, March 29, at 1 p.m. to face Loyola University (La.) which is receiving votes in the national coaches' poll.
