BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 20, 2018) – The Webber International University women's and men's tennis teams both cruised to a nonconference win over NCAA Division-II Franklin Pierce University as the Lady Warriors swept the Ravens 9-0 and the men were victorious by a score of 7-1 on a windy and cloudy Tuesday afternoon in Babson Park, Florida.
It was the third nonconference win of the season for Webber women's tennis (5-10), which swept through doubles action with
Jenna Fosdick and
Emily John winning 8-1 in the No. 1 spot while
Isabelle Niehoff and
Svenja Koenig came out on top 8-3 in the No. 2 position and
Juliana Fuentes and
Alissa Riedel won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
It was the third straight win at No. 2 doubles for Koenig and Niehoff, who also improved to 9-5 on the season as a duo.
In singles, John won 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot while Niehoff did not lose a point in the No. 2 spot, winning 6-0, 6-0. Additionally, Fosdick won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 position, Koenig won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, Fuentes won 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot, and Riedel also was victorious at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3.
The win for Fuentes was her fourth in a row in singles action as she improved to 6-3 as the team's No. 5 singles player. Fosdick and Koenig, meanwhile, both improved to 4-5 in nonconference singles action while Niehoff's win was her third of the season in singles and Riedel's was her second.
It was also the third nonconference victory for the Webber men's tennis team (5-8) as the Warriors again swept doubles.
Hugo Hasegawa and
Ivan Bonderanko won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles,
Kyle Hall and
Matthew Alexander won 8-3 in the No. 2 spot, and
Marc Schneider and
Lucas Bingenheimer also won 8-3 playing at No. 3 doubles.
As a duo, Haseagawa and Boneranko are now 10-3 overall and 5-2 in nonconference play from the No. 1 spot.
Webber then opened up singles play on the men's side with wins by Bingenheimer (6-0, 6-3) at the No. 5 spot, Alexander (6-4, 6-1) in the No. 4 spot and Bonderanko (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2 singles before Hasegawa lost a very competitive super tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, falling 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10).
The Warriors' final singles victory on the men's side was earned by
Kyle Hall, who won 9-7 at No. 6 singles.
The win for Alexander in singles was his second win of the year while Bonderanko and Hall each improved to 3-3 in nonconference action and Bingenheimer improved to 3-4 in nonconference from the No. 5 spot.
Franklin Pierce fell to 6-5 in men's competition and also fell to 2-17 on the women's side.
Next up, Webber will travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 21, to play NCAA D-II Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 3:30 p.m. The Warriors will return home on Sunday, March 25, at 12 p.m. to host ASA College (Miami), which is one of the top junior college programs in the country.
