BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 16, 2018) – The Warriors used wins from
Carlee Baxter and
Emily Bowen,
Salla Rautiainen and
Laura Embry,
Kaxandra Naranjo and
Molly Fusarelli, and
Teryn Mills and
Jessica Terry as the Webber International University beach volleyball team defeated its Crooked Lake rival Warner University by a score of 4-1 on the morning of Thursday, March 15. In the afternoon, the Warriors were victorious in the top two spots but dropped its three other matches, falling to NCAA Division-III Stevenson University in a close 3-2 defeat.
Against Warner's No. 1 duo, Baxter and Bowen won their opening set 21-17, fell in a close second set 25-27 and then came out on top in the third set 15-9.
Rautiainen and Embry (21-6, 21-12) cruised to victory in the No. 3 spot over the Royals as did Naranjo and Fusarelli (21-11, 21-12) in the No. 4 spot, and Mills and Terry came out on top 21-16, 21-18 in two hard fought sets in the No. 5 position.
Amber Lake and
Hannah Tannone fell 22-20, 21-15 in the No. 2 spot against Warner, but rebounded for a 17-21, 21-10, 15-8 three-set win over Stevenson's No. 2 duo.
Also against Stevenson, Baxter and Bowen teamed up for a tight 21-18, 22-20 victory in the No. 1 position to earn their second win of the day while the Warriors also fell in each of the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots
Rautiainen and Embry (21-15, 15-21, 15-12; No. 3 spot) and Allston and Fusarelli (19-21, 21-18, 15-10; No. 4 spot) each fell in three-setters while Mills and Terry (21-18, 23-21; No. 5 spot) lost by only a total of five points.
The wins for Baxter and Bowen improved their record to 6-6 as a duo on season while Lake and Tannone moved to 6-6 as well. Additionally, Baxter and Bowen are now 3-3 on the season in three-set matches while Lake and Tannone are 2-2.
Next up, Webber will host two NCAA Division-II schools, Lincoln Memorial University and Saint Leo University, on Wednesday, March 28, before heading to the NCAA Division-I University of North Carolina Wilmington Dig & Dive Invitational the following weekend (March 30-31).
