Men’s, women’s tennis drop two 7-2 decisions vs. Warner

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 28, 2018) – The Webber International University men's and women's tennis teams both hit a bump in the road in regard to their respective efforts to qualify for The Sun Conference Tournament as both teams fell 7-2 to the Royals on Wednesday at Webber's campus tennis courts.

Hugo Hasegawa was the highlight of the day for Webber, winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and earning an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles with his partner, Ivan Bonderanko. Hasegawa is now 4-1 playing in the top spot on the season while he and Bonderanko are also 4-1 as a duo at No. 1 doubles.

On the women's side, Isabelle Niehoff and Svenja Koenig earned an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles while Juliana Fuentes won 8-2 at No. 5 singles. The win for Niehoff and Koenig was their third of the season at No. 2 doubles while Fuentes' win at No. 5 singles was also her third of the season.

The Webber women nearly pulled off a victory at No. 1 doubles at Emily John and Jenna Fosdick fell 7-3 in the tiebreaker to drop the set by one at 9-8. Fuentes and Alissa Riedel also fell in a close 8-6 set at No. 3 doubles.

The Warriors were also victims of three heartbreaking three-set losses at the top of the ladies' singles action as Niehoff and Fosdick both won their first sets before both dropping their final two. Niehoff ultimately fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Fosdick dropped her match at No. 3 singles 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, John won her second set at No. 1 singles by a 6-3 score, but fell in sets one and three by scores of 6-4 and 6-3, respectively.

Other tough decisions for the Warriors on the men's side on Wednesday came from Marc Schneider in a close 7-5, 6-4 loss at No. 4 singles and Lucas Bingenheimer with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 three-set defeat at No. 5 singles with a 10-1 loss in the tiebreaker.

The Webber men's tennis team fell back below .500 at 2-3 both overall and in The Sun Conference while the Warrior women fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Both the Warner men's and women's teams saw their record rise to 2-4 both overall and in TSC action.

Webber will need to recover quickly to get back into the TSC win column as the Warriors will travel to play Ave Maria University at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
