BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 26, 2018) – After an exciting opening day on the sand in which the Webber International University beach volleyball team put up two valiant efforts against two NCAA opponents, the Warriors came together as a squad on Sunday, February 25, and defeated Southeastern University 3-2 for the team's first win of the 2018 season.
Each of Webber's three wins came in straight sets as
Amber Lake and
Hannah Tannone cruised to a 21-11, 21-8 victory in the No. 2 spot while
Laura Embry and
Kaxandra Naranjo won 21-11, 21-18 in the No. 4 position and
Teryn Mills and
Jessica Terry were winners in the No. 5 spot 21-7, 21-19.
The Warriors nearly had a chance to sweep the match as each of Webber's duos at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions fell in three sets.
Salla Rautiainen and
Molly Fusarelli won their first set at the No. 3 spot 21-16 before falling 21-8 in set two and dropping the final set in a painfully close 17-15 decision.
Webber's No 1 duo of
Carlee Baxter and
Emily Bowen came back from a close 21-19 loss in set one to win set two 21-14, but in set three came up short by a score of 15-8.
So far this season, Lake and Tannone moved to 2-1 as a duo while Baxter and Bowen have seen all three of their matches go to three-setters.
Next up, Webber will compete in the Eckerd College Battle on the Bay tournament held on Friday, March 2, in Petersburg, Florida. The Warriors will follow that up with another tournament, this one hosted by Florida Atlantic University on Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10, in Boca Raton, Florida.
