BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 30, 2017) – In the Warriors final match during the month of September, the Webber International University women's volleyball team swept The Sun Conference foe and rival Warner University by a score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-8) on Saturday at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
The Warriors finished off the month with four consecutive conference sweeps as their record rose to an impressive 11-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Warner fell to 3-7 and 1-3
Head Coach
Lindsey Martin spoke about the win, "Playing a competitive cross-town rival like Warner is always a big game for both sides. The intensity and emotions are always high, and hard fought points are always welcomed with roars from the crowd. It was a great opportunity for us to showcase what we have been training in front of a great crowd."
The Webber attack featured a two-headed monster as
Brittany Taksas and
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu each came away with 14 kills. Taksas was particularly impressive with a .571 attack percentage, a very-strong number for a middle blocker, while Salanoa-Sagapolu was also very effective at .323 percent.
Despite the match only lasting three sets,
Carlee Baxter reached 35 assists and also added double-digit digs with 10, and
Michelle Calderon led the team with 16 digs followed by
Gilmary Ramos with a career-high of 15 digs.
The Warriors used back-to-back kills by Taksas followed by back-to-back kills by Salanoa-Sagapolu to grab a 20-17 lead in the opening set, and in the second set, Webber led 10-4 and 22-14 as the Royals simply could not keep up with the pace set by the Warriors' attack.
Taksas led the way with eight digs during the second set while Salanoa-Sagapolu had six during the frame, and Baxter dished 15 assists while Ramos had eight digs also during the second set.
Next up, Webber will kick off October by hosting Keiser University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4, at the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Webber defeated the Seahawks 3-0 back on September 23 when the Warriors' current streak of sweeps began.
