Women’s volleyball stays undefeated in conference play

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 4, 2017) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team took down Keiser University by a score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) on Wednesday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center to earn its fifth consecutive sweep in seven The Sun Conference matchups so far this season.

Webber improved to 12-3 overall on the season and 7-0 in the TSC, while Keiser fell to 4-13 and 1-3. The Warriors currently have three more conference wins than anyone else in the league, and are now receiving votes in the most recent version of the NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday.

After dishing out an impressive 35 assists in only three sets against Warner University last Saturday (September 30), Carlee Baxter, the reigning conference setter of the week for each of the last three weeks, somehow bested herself again with 38 assists on Wednesday.

Baxter also finished with nine digs while Michelle Calderon led both teams with 19. Reigning conference attacker of the week Brittany Taksas and fellow-junior Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu earned 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while freshman Cameron Neely added 10. Taksas also recorded an attack percentage over .500 percent for the second straight match as she finished at .524 percent this time around.

Emily Bowen added seven kills while Jessica Terry and Amber Lake each made five digs, and Brianna Roque had two blocks.

In the first set of the night, Webber jumped out to leads of 5-1 and then 16-8 before Keiser got it back to 17-13. A kill by Bowen followed by an ace by Calderon halted the Seahawk's run.

Webber used a 5-0 run in set two to take an 11-8 advantage, and then pushed the margin to the largest of the set at 21-16. Keiser scored three straight to make it 21-19, but kills by Salanoa-Sagapolu on two of the next four points helped keep things in the Warriors' favor.

In the third and final set, the Warriors jumped out to another comfortable lead (12-5 and 16-8) and did not look back. Baxter dished 15 of her 38 helpers in the final set, while Calderon added eight digs and Taksas had six kills in the frame.

"Tonight's game was exactly how we wanted to set the tone for the rest of our matches this weekend," said Head Coach Lindsey Martin. "Being able to come out and execute our game plan against Keiser was paramount as we now shift our focus to our next opponent."

Saturday's match was the first of four matches in four days for Webber, a span that will really test the Warriors both physically and mentally. Webber will host Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) as a part of the Royals Classic on Thursday, October 5, at 7 p.m., and will also host Saint Thomas University for a conference matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 6. The Warriors will then return to action in the Royals Classic against the No. 19 team in the NAIA, Bellevue University, in a neutral match at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, at Warner University.

"Although it is not ideal to have back-to-back-to-back-to-back matches with little prep time in between, I am excited about the level of play we will see on the other side of the net as the weekend progresses," added Martin. "As always, we are striving to get better every play, every practice, every match, and this week will challenge us to step up to some great competition. It's an exciting week to be in the Warrior volleyball program."
